The trail is called the Te Araroa trail and it actually spans the north island too but I, as many people, decided to only do half of it. Each half tends to take people between 3 and 6 months depending on how fast they walk, how much they stop for a few nights at some town etc.. I went off track at some parts to see places I'd heard of from other walkers so I ended up skipping some parts of the trail to remain on schedule.
