Part of the problem we have, broadly, is the belief that political ideology is an identity. If you follow one idea, you must adhere to it not only completely but be 'consistent' with ancillary ideas. And as far as i understand, the reason for this has very little to do with victim blaming arguments like personal predilections toward idiocy and poor awareness as you suggested. Right right. /s Granted, CPTED studies do show that perceptions of public spaces do differ, with women being more apprehensive and perceive danger higher. But crime statistics reveal rather plainly that men themselves are more likely to be victims of violent crime.
