Certainly not attempting to be hostile in disagreeing with you, again, different people always going to have different opinions and so on. Though I will say that if that isn’t enough for you, there are similar results in terms of the male/female skew from tinder as well - which one could argue is almost exclusively focused on physical attraction for the most part.

Obviously we are different people and will have differing opinions, which is totally cool. Though I do find it funny that there seems to be an attempt to avoid the point landing that women on aggregate objectively rate men way harsher than the reverse. The data speaks for itself, not to mention the common sense observation that a woman can find a partner/mate much easier than a man, generally speaking.

To the contrary, if I recall correctly, in the initial blog post that this was from I believe the quote went something like “this suggests a strange thought process from the female user base. It seems that many women deem most men as not good enough for them, but then go right ahead and message them anyway”. Not an exact quote, but that’s pretty fucking close from memory

Oftentimes what I’ve observed is the exact opposite, where it’s the wife who has no sexual interest in her husband once they’ve been together long enough. It gets particularly absurd when you realise that often the husband is the man she has the least sexual interest in. Obviously anecdotal (and a common feature of female confessionals) but it largely seems to hold true to me.

In addition, frankly speaking I will trust data gleaned from what choices people actually make when they think nobody else is looking, versus what they will publicly claim to others. I’m sure there are exceptions, but in a broad sense, I trust the data and observation as a general rule over what someone might say to others.

One can only speak in generalities intelligibly here. Nobody can possibly account for the variance in every single individual. But in terms of a broad picture, both the data and observable reality don’t lie.

You seem to be ignoring the idea that a persons past is highly predictive of their future. If someone has had many prior partners, I ain’t writing a check against that. Especially when most women can attain the attention of the opposite sex far more easily than her male counterparts if she so chooses to. This is in addition to the fact that generally speaking, women tend to be the ones who push for marriage, become bored with it faster, and subsequently move for divorce, often at disproportionat…

Whether I like it or not, if I’m being honest, a woman who overtly claims “no hookups” (especially when not in response to any such question), makes me tend to assume the opposite. In my experience, I almost universally found these people to be the most receptive to sexual attention. Perhaps that might just be luck of the draw, but I cannot deny the most receptive to overt sexual attention almost always made such a claim initially.

The infamous okcupid data suggests that it’s actually men who are on the business end of unreasonable standards of attractiveness, not women. When 80% of men are considered “below average” looking - and on the other side of the fence, men are just as likely to find any given woman either attractive or unattractive. I simply cannot take this oft repeated line about women and unrealistic beauty standards seriously in the face of data like this. Just another example of what women often say being wi…

I think at that point you might not be in touch with the realities of how likely that is. Seems a little too optimistic (especially beyond earlier ages) to expect a partner who hasn’t had any themselves. But there are degrees here. A few (especially if most of those were in the context of a relationship) is probably nothing worth worrying about too much. And this point will vary for each person as to where to draw the line, but I think when you’re looking at a certain number that doesn’t signal …

“Why wouldn’t a man listen to women about what women like?” You may not like hearing this, but it is honest. I’m sure every single guy who reads this will be silently nodding when I point out that there isn’t a man out there who has not noticed something in his life. Women who claim they want or are attracted by one thing, yet their observed choices in men being in varying degrees of contradiction to what they claim. And I don’t even know if women are even generally self aware of these contradic…

I disagree. Just in terms of ones own desire to avoid being fucked over, the knowledge that someone has had many prior partners is not completely irrelevant to consider, despite what many will say. It may not be a perfect guide by any means, but it does at least telegraph the idea that this hypothetical person may lack a degree of impulse control. And given things like divorce rates, only a moron would not seriously consider this. As always, I’m sure exceptions exist. But on the other hand, ever…

Absolutely. Though I obviously have my own biases, I am not for a second suggesting this is a one way street. At the same time, I’m not going to pretend that the average man and woman engaging in this kind of thing are subject to the same level of frequency of people sliding into their messages for questionable reasons.

Speaking for myself, I’m not in a relationship, nor do I desire one - so I don’t have a dog in the fight so to speak. Yet I do find questions like this extremely interesting, largely due to the often huge divide between people’s stated positions versus what they actually do when they think nobody is looking. As far as the phone rule/idea specifically, I would say that anyone who offers serious resistance to such an idea (whether either of you actually make use of it or not) is at least partially…

This. This i can’t help but feel is the point that so many are, dare I say, deliberately overlooking or claiming ignorance on.

Not directing this at you per se, but rather taking what you said as an example to make a point I often see made. Honestly, I’m not impressed if someone (whether man or woman) doesn’t engage someone hitting them up that they aren’t attracted to or have no interest in. The real test of character comes when it is someone you find attractive/interesting/whatever. And just my opinion, but those who do not actually engage such attention to whatever degree in this situation are the minority. Yet, when…

I find it interesting that this seems to be the one of the only responses (whether one agrees or not) that is acknowledging the reality of the situation. Not sure where I sit on the second sentence, but the first one is dead on the money. “Social media is poisonous to a serious relationship”. My entire point is that so many people are reluctant to acknowledge this, and it’s awfully convenient that absolutely nobody is apparently tempted to engage external attention when you ask them.

I would agree in that cheating will most often be within ones own social/work/whatever circles. And I only mention this because this idea has been raised elsewhere a few times. This isn’t open simply to “randoms” and “scammers”. This thought also has relevance to those already within ones own circles too.

The commute example I can’t help but feel is deliberately missing the point of what I am kicking around. There are obviously going to be things like that that are simply part of life (for better or worse) and for all practical reasons unavoidable. That is a very different proposition to somebody in a serious relationship routinely posting pictures of themselves open to the general public.

I would agree that most people if asked would not conceive of social media platforms as “windows to infidelity”. I am simply pointing out the uncomfortable fact that they often are. And that this potential negative aspect is often very flippantly overlooked.

I’m unsure as to whether you are deliberately misconstruing the idea I am kicking around. Nothing to do with family members or whether looking at photos of relatives makes one more likely to cheat. You actually pointed out EXACTLY the phenomenon I’m talking about with regard to what you said about your occasional reddit messages. Not saying what anyone should or shouldn’t do, but if someone for whatever reason decides to shoot their shot, they will be free to do so. And I am simply wondering why…

Obviously, flirty or revealing pics should reasonably give any man or woman pause for thought. And frankly, there are a staggering number of women doing exactly that nowadays (yes, I know not all, before anyone wants to bring that one out).

Are you honestly telling me either yourself or someone you know in a relationship hasn’t received an expression of interest from the opposite sex via said platforms? Whether one entertains it or acts upon it is a separate issue. I’m simply pointing out that it makes such an occurence more likely. And speaking for myself in years past, it was rather eye opening to see just how frequently people were receptive to such advances. And every single one would have vehemently denied this.

I am simply making the point that anyone who is in a LTR who publically posts pictures of themselves on whatever platform is giving both an incentive and the means for any interested party to privately contact them. And I find it fascinating that this rather obvious point is very rarely freely conceded - actually, to point this fact out is often to invite a hostile response. Not saying one should or shouldn’t do anything here - just an observation that this objective fact is oftentimes intensely…

This is something I’ve noticed too. For all the typical talk of “I wear this makeup/dress/whatever for me”, often those who say this never are dolled up when it’s just their partner around. Oftentimes, it’s ironically only in places or occasions where other men are present. To be fair, I’m sure there is a male analogue to this kind of thing that I simply can’t think of right now - but it typically doesn’t come with all the contortions of reasoning to avoid the obvious point landing.

That’s true, but the difference here being that by posting pictures of oneself, this deviates from your example by also providing an incentive for anyone interested. As opposed to your example where the sick kid is not contributing an incentive for one to mail him death threats.

Not saying anyone should or shouldn’t do anything. Just always found it weird that often those who claim “I would never entertain other men/women hitting me up” never seem to acknowledge that they are providing both the incentive and the means for interested parties to hit them up. Always found it odd that almost never one hears something along the lines of “if you actually value your relationship in the way you say, why are you willingly engaging with something that makes questionable behaviour…
