I understand the confusion but it's a common way to present comparative numbers. And it's easier to read and reason with when reading a paper than "X% more".

I'm not the first guy you replied to. I'm not basing anything on anything. But as a neutral outsider: they already made a rough estimation and it does sound credible. And the actual numbers actually look pretty high, if that data can be trusted. I'll add the caveat that if the employment numbers are to be believed, these degrees don't seem worthless to me.

Yeah, I agree. In the era of information, having your accusation public is already a pretty huge punishment, and that should never happen before being found guilty. Unfortunately, that's a complex matter, because then you're saying that even if you have proof of something, you can't publish that if it concerns an alleged crime. This puts investigative journalism in a tough position.

That doesn't mean the accusation is necessarily false though. Just unsupported. What if somebody gets raped, but have no way to prove it easily. Are you suggesting they shouldn't even try to complain? Of course I'm not saying he's guilty. But there doesn't have to be a bad guy in every story.

I fail to see how you think this is the logical conclusion. The whole point of the debate is to determine where the limit is, obviously nobody is arguing that it could be anywhere after birth. If anything, abortion helps prevent such cases of infanticide.

Well that's the argument actually, intent vs. consequences. Whether it's actually different or not isn't relevant as much as the fact that it is judged differently according to modern justice. I have no strong opinion on the reasonable sentence for that, but I agree with your points. What I was saying is that the sentencing should be made solely on the consequences of the act, not the sentence it would have resulted in if it had succeeded. It can be worse, I agree, and it can also be somewhat inconsequential, it depends. What I'm trying to point out is that just because this particular crime is related to another, no matter how, doesn't mean it should be punished the same way. They should pay, that's for sure, but that's not how justice is supposed to work. You're comparing two crimes that are very different, and it doesn't matter that they're closely related. I mean, I know it's a stretch, but it's the same kind of reasoning as "an eye for an eye". You're right, he never did say that, and it wasn't my intention to make it appear so. The point I raise is relevant (I think), that's all. There's no reason for two different crimes, however related to each other they are, to always have the same sentences. That'd just be some kind of revenge.

So you only deserve a second chance when what you did had no consequences? I mean, we can't deal in absolutes here. Sometimes you ruin a life consciously, because you intended to do exactly that. Sometimes you ruin a life because you were only thinking about yourself and didn't worry about consequences. In both cases you deserve punishment, but not necessarily the same. Call me an optimist, but I really think that two years of non-freedom might put an end to the "not worrying about consequences"…

Well that's a pretty radical view of society. So she doesn't deserve to be rehabilitated? What about other criminals? I mean, sure, it's a crime and should be punished, of course.
