Something else to go with the other military advice, if you are something like an electrician in the navy you can work on your journeyman sign offs while still active duty, so you will be closer to being fully qualified when you get out. Hey you never know...you wouldn't be the first "not the military type" to find out they liked it and stay in...just no drugs...you WILL get busted eventually.

Unless you're really old, sub EMs are nukes. I was a nuke Machinist Mate. Nuke school is pretty damned hard to get into, but if can make it through the pipeline, you are pretty guaranteed a job when you get out. You generally aren't treated like garbage unless you're a dirtbag. Your take home pay isn't huge, but you can get free or mostly paid for housing, free medical, and stacks of other benefits including the GI bill. And before someone say it, I never had any problems with military medical care when I was in.

I'm kind of in a special condition. Working overseas is temporary for federal employees, after 3 years here I will transfer back to the job I left to come here, so really not much impacts me long term for now, in all likelyhood I won't see any of these people ever again. Also, I'm about as high as I can get in my field without an engineering degree, which honestly at my age I won't be getting.

I've been in and around the military for my entire adult life. It's so sad seeing what these guys get conned into marrying. Google the word "dependapotamus", there is a reason that word exists.
