I see this as positive because it's kind of humorous: "She was alone, so I made my move..." as if it's going to say something like harass her or take advantage of her being alone-- but ends up saying " and told the guys hassling her to back off." - Instead of it being negative, it turns out to be something positive. He essentially goes into saying that the men with the really high paying jobs have them because nobody else wants them.
