From what I've read based on the thousand times it's been posted, it is a shame show. These are volunteers that win money if they can withstand the emotional torture long enough. I think the slap was a grey area but I feel the host would know the rules better than a contestant. There definitely would be a "under no circumstances do this" section in the rule book.
