That guy who came in at the end? He has/had a very real possibility of going to jail for "assaulting" those girls. Trying to break them up might result in the same charges. Trying to stop a guy from hitting girls has a less likely chance of that happening. Perjury requires lying while sworn on the stand. Contempt of Court is not a law you can break, it's a judicial procedure. If the original charges never come to trial, the accuser has never made the allegation on the stand nor have they acted in such a way during that trial to constitute a Contempt of Court ruling. Perjury and Contempt of Court would not apply.

Our psych class actually analyzed this. Usually when you nod your head down, it's to someone you don't know or have had limited interactions with (or do not trust). When you nod up, it's to a friend, or someone you trust. It's a biological trait.
