I've studied neuroscience extensively, and the idea that all problems are caused by current chemical imbalances is a prevalent misconception. There aren't enough chemicals coded in our genes to have one for each personality trait. Hormones and chemicals early in development change how the brain wires itself, and with current medicine it's impossible to change that wiring. Current medicine can change a trans-person's body to match their brain, however. Let me explain it in more detail: you presum…

Yeah, but revealing clothing and miniskirts are even less restrictive than conservative clothing. And most rape happens when you aren't walking through a bad part of town.

Neither of those posters should be targetting a specific gender. Men who get too drunk also have bad shit happen to them, including rape. And women also need to be told not to fuck people who have had too much to drink.

Usually if both people are drunk, the initiator is views as the rapist. The male is just always assumed to have initiated.

Looks like I need to move it somewhere that people can actually read it. I think I might start a new .self post about it, now that I've written this all out.

Science requires significantly more than that. Science uses many techniques to correct for human error and biases, which PUA don't even try to do. Scientists don't just do an experiment a bunch of times, notice a trends as they are doing it, and jump to a conclusion. They would be (rightly) laughed at by other scientists. Scientific PUA would be something like this: Have one man repeatedly approach women in a constant environment under constant conditions dozens of times (if you don't keep the c…

That is how traditions work. They stick around for stupid reasons. He didn't claim that it was right, simply provided an explanation. Hate the problem, not the messenger.

That is patently false. The statistic he cites is pulled from a Dublin hospital in the 18th century. There is a similar maternal mortality rate today in places that have no modern medicine, such as Afghanistan. edit* 'Never' is a pretty broad statement.

More importantly, MRAs should not forget what this woman did for men's rights. She wasn't threatened just for setting up a men's DV shelter. She pissed off radical feminists by stating that women and men are equally capable of violence. Her interviews with women at her shelters showed that a great deal of domestic violence is reciprocal. This is something I can attest to anecdotally from my life, and that many people don't like to talk about.

I'm calling GoT troll now. Don't feed the trolls. Too obvious. Roided bodybuilder who looks down on everyone insulting nerds. At least be a bit subtle about it. Edit. Oh yeah, he loses troll points if you upvote me.

I resubmitted the article with a reasonable title, since I think some guys who come to seddit might benefit from seeing it. And yeah, the most useful thing she does is compile a list of PUA authors who already provided that.

The pro-sex feminist blogger Clarisse Thorne provides a moderate (for a feminist) critique of the pick up artist community. Then she points out some good PUA authors who manage to give good advice without inserting too much misogyny.

Okay, you have a point. She is overstating herself when she says that those techniques only work on women with low self-esteem. However, even women (and men) with high self-esteem have insecurities, and some PUA techniques do appear to take advantage of common ones. There may be some other mechanism that contributes to its success, but I would still feel uncomfortable using it. If my best friend needed a loan for something with legit reason, I'd give it to him without any problem. But part of it…

Fair enough, though the actual title of the article is just "Ethical Pickup Artistry." I added the rest to grab your attention and provoke conversation.

That is definitely true and not misogynistic at all. However, she seems to recognize that and doesn't bother trying to give advice herself. Instead she links to men within the PUA community who she thinks give good advice: Juggler, Mark Manson, and Zan Perion to name a few. All of these men have proven success with women and don't promote misogyny in the same way some PUAs do.

Facts may speak for themselves, but few feminists have the stomach to read PUA literature long enough to find those facts. I am a guy, but I can identify with her analogy of gold-panning in a sewer. If women were free to express themselves sexually, to be able to sleep with the people they wanted without being viewed as a "slut", we wouldn't have this conversation. LMR and freezeout techniques were developed as a result of real world situations. It happened because a situation was encountered en…

Ok, I admit the title is a bit sensationalistic, but this is reddit we are talking about. I think it's impressive that she is a feminist who is actually willing to admit that PUA advice is effective and that there isn't any good alternative. Of course, as a straight woman she isn't in a position to offer advice herself, and the first half of the article is mostly cautionary. But at the bottom of the article she links to several PUAs and quasi-PUAs that do provide good advice without having a par…

I am a feminist guy who was very turned off by the first PUA info I read a few years back. I forget who wrote it, but the view it took of both men and women seemed so demeaning that I decided I would rather remain ignorant. Fast forward a couple of years and I am single again and start looking for good seduction advice that didn't make me feel dead inside. Someone pointed me toward Clarisse Thorne and I was reading through her blog (mostly because of my interest in BDSM), when I stumbled across …
