One of the things I find amazing is that I consider myself to be much more liberal now than I was in college ~10 years ago. Yeah I've gone further left too. I was never rightwing, but I probably wouldn't have thought of myself as a Bernie supporter in college.

Oh absolutely. I remember thinking in all of my English/film/art classes, "hang on, it isn't even possible to conceive of a text that doesn't affirm the central concepts of feminism. The theory never changes regardless of the evidence." I just didn't have the language at the time to describe my objection.

I'm actually currently trying to form all my thoughts on this into a single effortpost, but in short, I think the claim that men suffer primarily because of misogyny/toxic masculinity, etc. is reductive and dogmatic. The framework of feminist theory overall has issues, but those issues become especially pronounced when applied to men and the problems they face. I mentioned Popper's falsification in a comment above, and if I make a longer post, I think it will center around that concept. In short…

It explicitly says they are a pro-feminist community in the sidebar. They claim to allow non-feminist participation, but based on the mods' removal habbits, that's ..... Kind of disappointed by my exchange with this mod. I started by assuming good faith, but it seems like they're just concern-trolling over "optics" to hedge a more dismissive criticism of this sub. I should have guessed.

that the analytical framework of feminism genuinely is a useful tool for most of what we deem "men's issues," I don't agree with that though. Again, that's the point of contention. If you're going to criticize a central position of this sub, then just do that instead of passive-aggressively talking "optics".

More of a focus on genuine issues activism and less on "who isn't doing activism the way we think it should be done" is a much easier sell. If feminism claims to properly handle men's issues, then an alternative group has to address that claim. Could manosphere types be better in handling that conversation? Like I've said a million times already, yes. But its bound to be central, and I think that's reasonable. Optics can improve from improving the quality of this conversation rather than neglect…

My solution would be to make criticisms of feminist rhetoric stronger and more precise rather than neglecting them. But yes, "FEMINAZI REKT" style arguing leads to optics issues, and is a problem in mra spheres. I'm not disputing that.

Tough to put all my thoughts into one comment but two aspects come to mind. In short: 1) Toxic Masculinity is more frequently discussed than Positive Masculinity, and more tangibly described. Because of this, its easier to assume that various male behaviors are "toxic masculinity" than the opposite. While the phrase itself doesn't denote that all masculinity is toxic, it certainly leaves the door wide open. 2) "Toxic" implies uselessness, or a total lack of benefit. This downplays the reality th…

You're begging the question. Users here generally think feminism is "men's issues stuff", or at least symptomatic of it. Obviously you don't agree, but you're not even properly describing the contention. fwiw I think the critique of feminism in MRA spaces is often sloppy, but I've already said that twice so 🤷‍♂️

I said myself in the first comment that I find a lot of mrm discourse unproductive, but I think reducing this sub to "picking online beefs" is selling it short. And if we're talking efficacy, I'm not really sympathetic to the /r/menslib approach, but that's just not something we're going to agree on.

Menslib is an explicitly pro-feminist sub. Obviously you aren't complaining about them in your posts. Feminism claims to adequately address men's issues, so with a less feminist sub, that contention naturally becomes central.

As someone who is pretty critical of modern feminism (even in this thread), I agree that a lot of bitching about the movement is counterproductive or uninformed. And I think the response from the commenter below you is....ill-measured. But on the other hand, what exactly do you expect? Even if I were to take up the most charitable possible view of feminism, we're still talking about a movement that refuses to make even the most basic concessions to reach men. When someone mistakenly conceives of…

unfalsifiable Falsification has always been a useful concept for me when discussing feminist theory, especially the claims that feminism helps men, and that men's issues can be adequately explained by feminist concepts. For anyone unfamiliar, the criteria that Popper outlines for pseudoscience pretty clearly applies to numerous claims made by online feminists.

Yeah, menslib threads range from awful to decent but they will always stumble as long as they seek to reduce men's issues to pre-existing feminist concepts like patriarchy and misogyny. I think a lot of the posters on the sub are more interested in using men's suffering to affirm the central concepts in feminist theory than they are in discussing practical solutions or actually helping men. They still don't treat men like morally valuable ends in themselves.
