Not embarrassing, but I was so tired that I accidentally texted a friend/coworker instead of my then-bf that had nothing to do with my weekend plans that I was able to still take time off rather than get roped into extra work. My friend/coworker texted back: “Good to know!…enjoy your weekend? And get some sleep!”

I’d definitely say it’s similar. Boys who feel inferior have this way of breaking women down into people they aren’t meant to be. It’s men who embrace the women as they are. And I can definitely relate to your situation - I’ve always been outspoken, and when I started to regain myself, my ex tried desperately to regain control, then just gave up. Every relationship should teach something. It’s important to realize that we have things to learn, whether good or bad.

This. When our anxiety flares, it’s good to understand the difference between what you need and what’s expected. For example, it may be the expectation that women want to be showered with jewelry, but is that what you really want? Or do you feel better when your partner knows what fits your personality and showers you with something you’d rather have? I’ve had to learn to retrain my brain from the abuse of my last relationship, such as not being constantly bombarded with texts and calls. Again, …

That’s almost as good a line as “I watched porn for the plot!” If he’s addicted to porn, nothing external will fix him. He has to want to change. You can’t fix him, you can’t break it for him. Let him go before there’s more damage done to you.

Agree, and add that you have to be careful of men you’re not friendly with at work too. I had a supervisor who didn’t like me (he blatantly told me I was weird in front of our whole team) and he would constantly make me do more work than everyone else - even on holidays - and I would also be set up for failure. And I kept trying because I thought that if I just persevered, I would have a wonderful career. I kept thinking that until his actions (there’s a lot I’m leaving out) led me to a mental b…

I would say you don’t need to dredge up the past when it hasn’t been asked. Think of it like delivering coffee to someone who hasn’t asked for it - they may want it, but you don’t want to give them something before they asked for it. As an example, I told someone I was a virgin and wouldn’t sleep with him. He then decided he “owned” me and tried to pimp me out, but also laid claim to my ability to choose a partner. I shouldn’t have said anything in the first place. Just continue to build the tru…

I always thought feminism was about protecting a woman’s choice on how she chooses to live her life (i.e., supporting women who have careers and supporting women who are SAHMs) versus the whole “screw who you want to screw” kind of choice. But maybe I need to reevaluate?

My ex firmly believed in this. He told me that I was a “solid 7” based on my looks and intelligence, and since he was a “3,” it was okay. 🤨

I remember this all too well. My ex not only told me that his ex was crazy, but one of his best friends confirmed it. Yet she was the one in his family photos, and I (his fiancé no less) wasn’t invited in. Pretty damn sure his baby mama has been told how “crazy” I am. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jordan Peterson apparently advised college freshman to not take English literature courses, for fear that it’s one of the fields corrupted by “neo-Marxist ideology.” As an English major, the only thing I remember from classes was learning to love classic literature and new genres. I must have missed neo-Marxism day.

I’ve actually had lots of luck reconnecting with friends from college. I’m the “badass single one” because IDGAF about settling down or letting a man touch me or my money. And like others have said, definitely get into hobbies and find like-minded people.

Ah yes, the age old “he just LIIIIIKES you” bull. I had a guy bully me from elementary school through high school. At each school it escalated to the point I had to go to the principal. In high school, it reached a breaking point after he made fun of my dog dying. Back then, people told me it was because he liked me. Now, people say he was just an ass. And if he ever came out and told me he liked me then, I would laugh in his face and tell him how much of a shit he was.

I should have learned this with my ex. He forgot our 1st anniversary, and when I started crying, he FaceTimed me so he could see me cry. He then “kindly” offered to break up with me so he wouldn’t make me cry anymore. I fought for love. And I wasted three more years with someone who never loved me and told me that he never wanted to propose to me.

YES. I knew a guy that everyone said “he’s great to his friends, but shit to women.” So that makes him an asshole? “No, because he’s great to his friends.” No, it makes him an asshole.

It does depend on age, as others have said. However, if you’re in your late 20s - early 30s, you should know within a year where you’re going with the relationship. Five years is asking to be strung along.

I can relate. For me, it took stepping away from everything to determine what I loved to do, and what I was programmed to think I should do. I love to exercise and eat healthy, but I love to eat sushi. I love playing with makeup. I do what makes me happiest and damn other people if they try to make me feel bad. I always say if someone has a problem with my happiness, then that’s their problem, not mine.

I actually encouraged him to go to the gym with me. We went once, and he refused to go with me again because I could lift more than he could. You are very right about his insecurity - he had that in abundance.

I’m sorry - I thought your response was about the other comment regarding my dad supposedly making me “push through the pain.” There are parents who subscribe to that so-called methodology, and that is horrific to say the least.

Whoa, my dad didn’t encourage that. I called him when the back of my knee gave out between miles 4 and 5 of my half marathon. He told me firmly to stop. I told him I couldn’t do that. He was very angry that I didn’t stop. I finished the half (mostly walking), and went straight to the medical station, then taped up my knee when I got home. He’s not happy that I put myself in danger. But I’ve been running for a loooong time now, and I know when it’s an injury that needs me to stop, or an injury th…

My ex was similar too - cheap with food, yet spent whatever he could on himself. I naturally don’t eat much when I do eat, and he said he couldn’t justify spending money on me if I wasn’t going to finish a meal. Okay then... And my dad’s cucumbers and tomatoes are the best! I always enjoy the summer when they grow because he always packs up a ton to give me. And thank you, fellow queen. 👑😘

I’m proud of you - you dumped 30 pounds plus however much he weighed! Honestly though, it’s so difficult to maintain healthy choices if your partner doesn’t support you. As a futurist, I’m shaking my head. This is insane, and lacking in any kind of theory and analytics in general. Basically, they’re calling for genocide of women. My parents agreed (before my brother and I were born) that my mom would stay home. They’ve always had a partnership, with equal everything, including finances. Even now, when my mom needs to spend money on things for the organization she’s a part of, my dad doesn’t fuss. He even supports her in every element of what she wants to do, and spends his extra time helping spruce up whatever project she’s working on (he did graphics for a living). My NVM ex started out strong, but then delved into gifts that were to mold me into his dream girl. By our last Christmas together, he got me a GameStop gift card, and socks that didn’t fit. Ladies, it’s not just the thought that counts, but be wary if there’s no thought at all.

I’m just a happy person overall - I’m generally enthusiastic, I smile a lot, and I try to take a genuine interest in other people. I get enthusiastic about things with very little prompting, so if I find out someone likes something that I do, I want to engage them in conversation. I also make puns and jokes and pop culture references - I find people engage better when I do.

I had something similar - I was told that I couldn’t wear stripes because it “accentuated my feminine attributes.” And that the men were staring at me - all three men that I didn’t work with or see. And the woman telling me this continued to demean me in front of the client every day. Anyone who says anything about your wardrobe like that is going to build a toxic workplace.

You know, when I was with my ex fiancé, I did everything I could to make him feel special. I spent time and money to get his friends together for his birthday, and he didn’t even say thank you. For Christmas, I spent time and money to get him things he’d enjoy, like a book on whiskey. He gave me socks that didn’t fit. Men aren’t owed anything if they can’t even put the basic effort in for their partners.

My ex was a mason. Supposedly they do a lot of good. But they let horrible behavior amongst the members slide because of “brotherhood.” It’s just like a fraternity, but worse. There’s a sister society, but apparently they just talk shit about it, like they shouldn’t exist. I’ll happily eat my words if there are decent masons out there. But in my experience, I don’t think there are.

I used to run outside at a trail near my condo. I had to pass by a certain restaurant that had a reputation for being a meat market, and would HATE going there because of comments about my legs and butt in my tights. Someone said I should just be flattered. It was not flattering - it’s why I bought a treadmill to run from home.

I’ve actually known women in this very situation. Fortunately, their husbands stood by them. Either way, this guy was eviscerated by the commenters, meaning that no one was going to stand on his side.

I wouldn’t call you a hypocrite - you know what you want, and you didn’t entertain any illusions that the person you were with would magically get their act together. Which is what this POS didn’t do. And so, he basically ruined the last few years of her life thanks to his pathetic actions.

THIS. I was visiting my then BF and he had stopped by his apartment after work to tell me that he was going out for drinks to celebrate his birthday (which was the reason I was there). His friend, who hadn’t met me at that point, basically pulled me out of the apartment with enthusiasm because he wanted me to go more than my BF did. I now know that if they have no enthusiasm, then I have no reason to go with them anywhere.

TL;DR: guy’s wife has ovarian cancer and may have to have a hysterectomy. He LEAVES her hospital room because he’s distraught that he won’t be able to have a “real” family with bio kids. He even begged her to have kids when they got married in their 20s, but she wanted to wait because of her career, and he thinks she was selfish. Thank god the commenters took him to task.

Screw that guy. Honestly, I love a good salad. There’s a place near me called Sweetgreen and I would swim in their spicy cashew dressing if I could. And sometimes, a salad really hits the spot. But if anyone tries to control what I eat, they get the chop. I had an ex yell at me at a restaurant because I “always order the crab cake.” I like crab cakes. My NVM ex told me repeatedly that he never wanted kids. I didn’t either, but he was way more vocal about it. I even had a text saved where he was grateful we were on the same page about kids because he hated his friend’s baby crying all night. He then cheated on me and knocked up the other girl because he was tired of me “forcing him” to go childfree. Honestly, seeing how he was with our dogs, there was a reason I didn’t want kids with him. For women on the fence, I think it’s about “will this m…

I did a FWB back in the day (not proud of it), but I wasn’t waiting for him to suddenly realize I am “THE ONE.” The only thing I realized is that when you have a FWB situation, the men will make it about their needs on their timeline, not yours. So the best thing to do is not engage them, and not fall under their indentured sextitude.

I think you may be missing the point. A bunch of us here play games too (I’m an avid Pokémon fan), but we also know how to balance gaming with other things, like basic hygiene and going outside. There are some LVM who take gaming to an extreme where they ignore their SO and basically place it at a level above everything. I’ve been there - I went to visit my then-boyfriend (now ex and a total NVM), and all he wanted to do was play his game, ignoring me for my whole visit. Gaming isn’t the problem…

LVM complaining about proposing have such a sense of entitlement. I mean, if you expect your wife to carry your child for nine months and bear them, clean up after your immature ass, and basically be a pseudo single mom, the least you can do is buy a damn ring. I don’t have enough time to mould myself into a better individual in all the ways I want to - why would you assume I have the time to mould someone else into the ideal man? Plus, most men I’ve met would rather have a million root canals before implementing advice from a woman. Also, “men that are happily married prosper” - research has shown that they prosper at the expense of their spouse. Most men want a maid, not a true partner.

That is the worst of the worst case scenarios. I feel sorry for your friend.

I guess this just confirms that I should probably move - most places I go and groups I join are filled with married people. But my goal is less about dating these days and just meeting interesting people who like to have good conversation.

Eh, on Bumble you have to message them first, which I thought I’d appreciate but I don’t, so I put a kibosh on that. I honestly don’t know where to go anymore for OLD.

I don’t push for the long texts, but I try to respond appropriately, if that makes sense. For example, this guy stated that he loved the writing of C.S. Lewis. I studied Lewis in school and knew his work well, so I asked if he’d read The Screwtape Letters. He said no, so I said that I highly recommend it if he likes satire and social commentary. Never heard from him again.

I was just talking to someone about this. I’ve been feeling a bit crummy because I’m not a hook-up type of girl, which seems to mean my dating pool is limited. One of my guy friends told me that I need to have hook-ups in order to have a relationship. I felt awful for a bit, but realize that I’m not going to change my stance to keep the wrong kind of guy interested. No woman should have to have sex to keep a guy’s interest, or to land a man.

“Plus sex for girls start early” bitch please. It only starts early for some because girls are told that’s how you get a guy to like you, and that if you don’t have sex before college, you’ll never get it and you’ll die a lonely woman. Which is all perpetrated so guys can get some and then shame women.

Let’s face it - the love of this kind of LVM is himself, end of story. He’s not dumping you for the love of his life, he’s dumping you to feed his ego.

I only mentioned my ex in the sense that I was engaged and that it didn’t work out, but not the emotional manipulation. But I definitely agree with you about being cautious.

The one guy I’ve gone on a date with has been HV - we have amazing, intelligent conversations, we’re on the same wavelength with politics to culture to even women’s rights, and when I told him I wanted to go slow, he agreed and didn’t just find an excuse to leave. He’s the absolute opposite of my ex. And I let him know about my ex, and he understands and doesn’t use it against me or anything. But you’re right - I shouldn’t be dating until I’ve unpacked things. I’m actually a lot better than I wa…

Can you clarify what you mean by removing relationship cords? I’ve eliminated all contact with my ex, if that’s what you mean.

I’m taking dating veeeeery slow, and am taking my time - the silver lining for me of COVID is that I don’t feel pressure to meet someone. And I’m not super active in dating either. However, I do agree with you that I’m still somewhat vulnerable, but I would say that makes me less open to bad behavior because I don’t care to put up with BS. But I’m having a hard time trusting a good guy because my ex was a “good guy” until he wasn’t.

THIS. My LV ex basically noped out of our relationship and was too cowardly to tell me so (but was okay with me planning an elaborate birthday for him to see his friends), and immediately knocked up another girl. He told me at the end that I wasn’t a great partner. This among a lot of other things has given me great pause to try again. Meanwhile, he’s stuck with another relationship and a kid, and still trying to contact me.
