Salsa is a street dance from New York. The Ballroom community may have picked it up but they didn't create it. Have you learned Bachata?

My preference is for grassroots dance scenes. These dances will be held at community centers and maybe bars. Ballroom with a B refers to structured format. The trickle the knowledge out and focus on competitions. Lots of things that monetize the dance and not for you. Salsa is probably the most common. It's fast and most people think of it as sexy. AM is the pyramid scheme of dance. Some of the female teachers(And probably men) are chosen because they look the part before they step foot on the dance floors.

Ballroom is like multi-level marketing for dance. There are syllabuses of moves and you pay $$$ to be taught so many moves from a dance style, and then you move on to the next style.
