For the record I did read the book, though it's been some time. I take each as its own story, with its own themes. The movie to me is a valid film that holds up well, just has very different themes as a cautionary tale about jingoism and the power of propaganda on a nation. Stop comparing it so hard to the book and you'll have a great time. Heinlein was a great author, amazing at classic hard sci Fi. Time For The Stars made me cry. But I don't think he translates too well to film.

as a Canadian, trust me, there's something like 65% cultural overlap with the USA (source: my ass). we watch the same shows, listen to the same music and read the same news. we speak the same language and Reddit the same hours. we're generally more polite and non-confrontational, but we have the same general cultural issues as the Americans. edit: also, I just wanna say that I have had great experiences with cops many a time. Met one once who was an asshole, but nothing really bad happened.

Maybe it's because I've never been raped but it seems to me that justice is the best therapy. Avoiding it because it's painful is a bad idea in the long term for so many reasons. IMO there is one response to take: walk to a phone, call 911, ask for a rape kit and a lawyer.

My main argument is that on more than one occasion a girl has lied to me about being molested by a parent or raped by a guy in order to garner sympathy or seem more interesting or play to my codependent side. More than one. Wait, let's get more specific. Let's see... at least three of the people I've been romantically involved with. And it's not like I've had a lot of girlfriends. I'm an introvert. This is, like, 40% of the women I've "dated". It just seems like it's a thing way too many females…

Disagree with you there. Crimes need to be punished, even if the victim doesn't want to deal with it. Anyone who says someone committed a crime but refuses to report it... I start to think they might be lying. Had girlfriends claim wild things before to seem interesting or make me jealous, and I always called that bluff.
