The article I'm remembering makes those points with nicely sourced data. As you said, when you look at male and female doctors, males are more likely to go into higher paying specialties like heart surgery than women who are more likely to go into things like family medicine or general practice. Sex is not the same thing as gender, and as it happens sex isn't even so simple as mere chromosomal sex as BedMonster pointed out. Gender is not a biological phenomenon so much as it's a social phenomenon, and in that context language is important.

Interesting. I'll read it more closely when I'm done with finals. I think it's fair to be somewhat suspicious of data that contradicts the standard assumption, so I can't help but wonder how the fact that this study was looking only at University students affected the results. University students' lives are somewhat different than middle aged counterparts.

For the sake of argument, let's suppose that women are more likely to be violent in relationships but are less likely to significantly harm their partners than men. I think that the fact that abused women are in more serious physical danger than abused men are is an important distinction to make, and I think that's the source of the perception that women are more likely to be abused than men.

Do any of these studies make a qualitative distinction between different kinds of violence? A slap in the face and a broken rib and rape are all violence, but I don't think you could argue that there's not an important qualitative difference.

That's not a problem. Women were and are more likely to be victims of domestic violence than men. So jokes about domestic violence against men can be considered ironic because that is relatively unexpected.

we wouldn't want to come off as humorless. This argument would make sense if the only way to be humorous was by regurgitating oppressive attitudes and stereotypes. Fortunately, this is not the case. It's neither ironic nor satirical to deliberately adopt the language of oppression (ie. "It's not sexist to call someone a 'dumb bitch' if everyone knows I was jokingh"). I think ReturnUsername's point is that adoption is a decision not solely up to the mother. If the father will not consent to abandoning the child or giving it away, then it doesn't happen. The mother can then walk away from it and leave the baby with the father who is then entitled to receive child support from the mother.
