You definitely can, with some caveat. You have to treat yourself like you love yourself at the very least. I hated myself and at times I still hate myself, but through the self loathing I try my best to stay in shape, improve myself, work on my passions, and help others. Perhaps I do these things BECAUSE I hate myself, but in doing so, I feel like I have attracted many beautiful people into my life. Including people I’ve loved deeply. Finally. I think most guys are so entrenched in the “technique” of things, when this is also perfectly acceptable and can most definitely result in success. Yes! And no...what you’re feeling is definitely common: it’s something like infatuation, yes. It doesn’t mean even the slightest that the feeling is mutual though. That you can discover through chemistry (emotional/sexual/etc) and cultivating a relationship.

I think your current attitude will definitely result in outcome you foresee. I think a better attitude to have is “oh, well there can’t be much competition, and I have something to offer that other people definitely don’t have, and will use that to my advantage.” Law of attraction my friend.
