They are the same gun. The AR15 was the original rifle created by Armalite and it's semi automatic civilian version. When the US military adopted it, they gave it their own designation, the M16. Now its the M4 which is basically the same rifle but a shorter barrel. Those are select fire (semi and fully automatic) and are unavailable to the public.

I believe Ruger is the top selling gun manufacturer in the US. They make handguns and rifles. I don't know if the Glock 17 is the most popular handgun, but Glocks are definitely very popular. Pump action shotguns used to be the weapon of choice for guarding a home, but in the last few years with AR15s being so cheap I think people are buying those instead. The new cylinder head for one of my broken trucks arrived yesterday, so I'm probably going to slap it on this weekend and get it running again.
