Compassion, showing vulnerability, charity... these all come from positions of power.

To add to this. Once you are in a long term relationship and things settle down, you don't have to be "alpha" all the time and you can and should show vulnerability. Perhaps it would be better to say your goal is to command respect.

I think the point is: How bad do you want it? Work two full-time jobs constantly trying your hardest, giving out resumes to higher paying places the entire time without a break and trying to improve yourself. Spend only enough to stay alive. You won't have any spare time but you'll be rich soon enough. Personally I'm not willing to sacrifice relationships, fun and probably my health.

Perhaps "Don't get too invested trying to fix anyone" would be better. Plus trying to fix anyone who doesn't ask for it is near impossible other than merely leading by example.

Just because it's subconcious doesn't mean you're not doing a superior thought pattern to feel->react. For example one can use a if/then/else thought structure to reprogram their mind to be: IF guy argues with you on the internet THEN ignore whereas I think it's more human nature to feel that he's wrong and get emotionally charged and try correct him or insult him or whatever.

Albertan reporting in. Probably more dangerous than elsewhere but I can't getting more than a shove. Pretty safe to do if you just read the situation. Being as big/bigger(or projecting confidence) than the guy would obviously lower your chances of trouble.

This works especially if your perceived social status is below a targets. On the other hand if your social status could be higher then not smiling could completely shut down the interaction, causing insecurity and other problems. Also a man who's has a physically intimidating stature could use smiling to create comfort and trust. If your stature isn't intimidating at all it could be better to present yourself more seriously. So I guess just calibrate to the situation.

Try working on buliding rapport. You might be coming off as one night stand material.

That does sound reasonable (of you and him). Good post.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
