From what I recall, it wasn't so much that people were almost dead at 30/40. It was that so many people died young that the average life expectancy was much much lower. I believe that if you made it to 20 your chances of making it to 50-60+ were pretty good.

People seem to forget that drafted women could serve in non-combat roles in a time of need freeing up more men for combat positions. Not that this is necessarily a good thing but is shits all over any reason to exclude women from the draft.

In my observations women have much more influence over other womens sexual behavior than men do.
