They're not this sensitive. Oh sorry. My toxic femininity must be flaring up again.

That's fine if you believe that but I personally agree with a lot of feminists who believe that assigning any negative traits as feminine as being a sexist attitude. I think that attaching negative behaviors to masculinity will only lead to the mistreatment of men and those who celebrates masculinity.

A compromise- if you can find me some quotes with sources, I'd be willing to pretty them up and present them exactly as I did here.

I might agree that maybe the name could be something else to try an avoid the very mistake I believe you just commited But that's exactly the point of the term isn't it? There doesn't need to be another term for negative gender roles, we just say negative gender roles. The whole purpose of 'toxic masculinity' as a term is to place blame on masculinity. If we were to start grouping all of the expectations that women are held up to and the negative traits sometimes found in women as 'toxic feminin…

Good point, however I think directly attributing to one source may also diminish the power of it. It makes it easier to assign blame to a particular feminist/publication when really the problem is with the term itself.

Only whenever I see 'toxic masculinity' being used patronizingly.

Fair point. I'd be willing to remake it at some point but it was mostly just me venting after seeing something someone posted on Facebook.

More often then not I see it used as 'everything bad that's happening to men can be traced back to how men were raised to be masculine'. Sure a lot of these arbitrary issues that are grouped under 'toxic masculinity' are big problems that need to be worked on but grouping them all under a blanket and assigning the blame to 'masculinity' is just sexist. If you reversed the genders this feels like it could have been a counterargument to 2nd wave feminism where instead of everyone addressing the mi…

Fair enough, I've just see so many feminists using the 'toxic masculinity' as if it's helping men, without even considering how sexist of an idea 'toxic femininity' would be.

Addressing your edit- I can see where you're coming from but that's kind of the whole point. We never used the term 'toxic masculinity' because it's obviously a grouping of sexist male descriptors. Like 'the patriarchy' it's just another fluctuating, nebulous collection of things that feminists don't like. It's not the same as 'internalized misogyny' because you don't have every shitty thing that ever happens to women grouped under it and then turned back around and spun as a problem with femini…

I posted this elsewhere but how would you feel if we started using 'toxic femininity' as a blanket term to address issues such as 'self objectification, physical weakness, and self destructive emotional sensitivity'?

There's nothing wrong with focusing on negative traits and working on them on a person to person basis but I find something deeply frustrating about those traits being labeled as masculine, especially when those same traits can often be found in women. What if a man were to create a list of arbitrary, negative traits like 'back-stabbing, infidelity, physical weakness and being overly emotional' and then label these traits as 'toxic femininity'? It wouldn't only be considered an impractical way d…

Oh thank god. I totally didn't catch. The title makes more sense now too. Now I feel like an asshole.

I think a lot of women would still check 'woman' too. I don't think a preference of gender is any kind of indication of who has it better- which is a stupid conversation to have in the first place because that's entirely subjective and based on your personal values. I do agree with you on not allowing victim complexes to become a major component of the MRA movement (I'm actually discussing this somewhere else right now as well). I will also agree that this does seem to paint men as oppressed in …

One of the biggest problems of the men's right movement is being mistaken for being third wave feminists with dicks- but how do we know that we're not? I personally find the whole concept of 'micro-agrresions' to be asshole behavior being mistaken for social prejudice and isn't something that's worthy of being discussed. But where do we draw that line? At what point does something cross over into being an issue that we all agree needs to be addressed?

I don't think he's arguing against speaking publicly on a subject, I think he's arguing that you may as well spend 10K on a really nice soapbox to stand on, because that's all TEDx really is.

but there's no need to imply too much about the state of society by it I think there are many people in this subreddit who would disagree with you. There's quite a bit feminist media that suggests that men, by gender alone, are prone to violence and rape. The way law is currently practiced, men are often assumed to be guilty until proven innocent if the crime they are charged with involves any harm to women- while women responsible for domestic abuse or rape will often go unpunished or be comple…

No true feminist would believe those things. Also see this list of times feminist organizations have fought to keep gender equality movements from benefiting men.

Why do you feel that way? Obviously there are a lot of people who liked this message, why do you think it shouldn't be said?

While it's fair to argue that it isn't the goal of feminist's to take away the rights of men, they do tend to do this quite a bit. Note that these aren't just individuals acting but whole organizations like NOW and the London Feminist Network that are actively fighting against what many people would consider gender equality.

The scary thing is that empathy may have been what originally drew them into that ideology. They then let their empathy for one type of person become an excuse for not caring about another type of person. It can happen to anyone if you're not paying attention to your actions and opinions.

I realize the burden of proof probably falls on men here but is there any scientific evidence that men are biologically 'more likely to be thirsty'? I realize that the societal norm is that men have a greater libido but now I'm curious about what science there is that backs up that notion. Not saying I disagree with you, anecdotally I've also seen more assertive 'thirsty' men than women but now I'm curious how much of that is biological.

I agree with you on that. I was just pointing out that it seemed like you were suggesting that men are more prone to leering than women which isn't really helpful to anyone.
/r/MensRights05/12/15 06:21 PM

They give admiring glances, they dont really leer like they are going to drool or something. You're really generalizing here in a way that's kind of dangerous. A majority of men may also give admiring glances. What I think /u/Arby01 is trying to point out is that a victim could easily misconstrue an 'admiring glance' as having caught the person leering which caused them to look away. While simultaneously you could have a man being leered at by a woman who might not be believed because 'women ten…

Again- not disagreeing that both sides have issues that need to be dealt with. Are you mostly disagreeing with his last statement or the specific issues he brought up? Or are you suggesting that both sides shut up and deal with it? Because that's not super helpful either.

every time someone claims to be oppressed by society and objectively worse off it undermines that I'll agree with the 'objectively worse off' part because that always comes down to individual values and is ultimately a losing battle. That being said though it's pretty hard to address issues if we aren't talking about them. Bringing up the advantages women have over men (especially to those who are thoroughly convinced that those advantages don't exist) is essential if we want to address these im…

I personally feel like his adopted 'victim complex' was more of a dig at his opponent than anything else but I wanted to tell you I tossed you a couple upvotes because it's always good to see opposing opinions on here. The last thing this sub needs is to become a hugbox.

It's mostly a dig at third wave feminists because he was wrapping up a debate with one when he said this. You'll also notice that everything he said wasn't asking for men to recieve special treatment, but to stop giving women special treatment in specific areas where it's not needed. I agree with your notion that both genders have problems that need to be dealt with but I think what he's addressing here is that a lot of problems that are facing men were created by feminists trying to help women.

I'm curious as to what parts of this speech do you feel play victim? He lists a lot of problems that men today are facing but Straight white women in the west are the most privileged class in history of our species. But we'll be fine. This isn't exactly a cry for help.

I actually think that's the best way possible to introduce the cause. Because honestly ...white supremacist movements also have very few people gathering in public... is how the public sees us right now. Bigoted extremists that no one gives a damn about. And that could have been where the trailer moved on to the feminist side of things- but then we cut to several composed men, who look upset (not angry) as they list off actual facts that support the movement. It might not convince anybody to imm…

It's probably going to be taking just as many shots at MRA's as it is going to at Feminists. This trailer was probably cut in an effort to appeal to MRA's since she hasn't been able to get funding any where else. That being said, just the fact the she's willing to show feminists in a critical light is more than we've ever gotten before. Having an actual conversation that goes beyond "you don't support us? Then you're a misogynist" with feminists is well worth having some unflattering looks at th…

The most common reaction amongst feminists is, ‘why are you giving them a platform to speak?’ I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve heard that. Yet there are documentaries about the Westboro Baptist Church and about skinheads, yet they are so fearful of this topic, and I’ve started to figure out why.” It feels strange to be hyped about this.

Do you understand why this movement doesn't get much sympathy? You can blame feminist conspiracy theories as much as you like but at the end of the day it's been because of people like you. I understand why you're upset, but for the sake of actually getting shit done can't you recognize that what you're saying is exactly what feminists want you to say?

This trailer/documentary may very well be a litmus test to see how unaware people are of their own militant feminist viewpoints. I highly doubt this movie is going to sway many of the hardcore feminists (it would very easy for some to dismiss the filmmaker as 'privileged' just from looking at her) but this documentary could be a great method for reaching that neutral person and opening their eyes to the plight of men and how MRA's actually are trying to pursue gender equality.

I'd recommend watching the trailer. It's probably one of the first time's I've ever seen a feminist cast MRA's in a sympathetic light which is HUGE. Just in the first minute of the trailer they show feminists trying to disrupt an MRA gathering with a chant telling them to "go away". I immediately tossed a couple bucks their way right then and there because the film maker has already proven they're willing to go against the grain.

Junkies will do a lot to get that hit. He may have had multiple contacts on Facebook who were willing to hook him up with dangerous stuff, which would also explain why she's not letting anyone meet him without setting up a meeting. She could be trying to get him sober, he may want her to help him get sober. I know a lot of posters are trying to get OP to call the cops but I think a better alternative would be to at first arrange a meeting by the wife's rules first, police later.
