Many hostels have the option of shared rooms, so if you travel with 2 - 3 friends you are basically getting a hotel room. The majority were clean. (except for the kitchen and dinning areas during meal time / social pregaming time.) Cheap? yes. Weird sleeping in a room with strangers? Not really.
