It sickens me that prepucectomy (circumcision) isn't listed. Apparently, it's OK to remove part of the penis but not all of it (penectomy). I find it odd that clitorectomy isn't listed. Granted, it is included in the vague A: Female Genital Mutilation section, but then vaginoplasty and vulvoplasty are, too.

I've been actively working to stop male child genital cutting (aka circumcision) for 25 years. I'm on the board for Intact America. We just had this conversation a week ago. I appreciate your position. It is just like mine. I've had the same thoughts a hundred times and in dozens of conversations. Protecting ALL children from genital harm seems like a slam-dunk, to me. But diehard feminists and many anti-FGM activists don't think so. They think of it as a competition. It's not. Sad, but true.

They are not asking because they want to know. They are asking if the reader knows. My guess is that they can't recite the so-called 16 functions, but for some reason they think the rest of us should be able to.

Sounds like hypospadias. It is the most common intersex form. In most cases, nothing needs to be done if urination isn't painful, the boy just needs to learn to pee more carefully or pee sitting down. In other cases, less invasive plastic surgery will do the trick. Amputation is rarely indicated. More than likely, you were cut because you didn't look 'right.' It is called gender-norming surgery. Sorry for your loss.

Male genital cutting removes a functional and valuable part of a newborn boy's sexual organ. Eventually, he'll become a man. It reduces most of the penis's sensitivity, thereby reducing sexual gratification for him and his partner, too. A cut man is 4.5 times more likely to acquire ED. And, since it is an early trauma, it causes permanent damage to his developing brain. So that's a lot of bad, right?

It's not MOSTLY a religious ritual. Less than 1 in 40 newborn circumcisions are performed within the context of a ritual. And, that ratio is getting smaller every year.

I have to begrudgingly agree with you. To the ACLU, rights of adults trump the rights of children, even if those rights are specious. Note that the Federal FGM law does not have a religious exemption. And the Supreme Courts' Prince v. Massachusetts ruling says parents' cannot use their religion against their children. The ACLU is straddling a very narrow fence and it is getting narrower by their statement protecting intersex. Soon that fence will be too weak to support their sexism.

You either misread the post, or are using a strawman logic fallacy in order to better attack the claim. Note that the OP said "genital mutilation" and then went on to talk about minors. That conflates to the forced genital mutilation of minors. You then compared that to a procedure elected by a fully informed adult. Think about that for a minute.

The real problem is that they use the most severe form of FGM for their comparisons, but then don't select the most severe forms of MGM. Keep in mind that both are rare. The most common form of FGM, female circumcision, is remarkably similar to the most common form of MGM, male circumcision. Comparisons between FGM and MGM are inevitable when this topic comes up. Equally inevitable are those who claim one is worse than the other. I call this the Severity Argument. I've been hearing it for 20 years. Severity is not the measure. In a court room you are guilty or not. Severity of the crime doesn't make you more or less criminal. Severity is simply a mitigating factor in sentencing.

Mutilation is accurate. It is a medical term found in medical dictionaries. It is just as valid as the word circumcision. Medically, a mutilation is the result of any unnecessary surgery. Every medical association in the world calls circumcision unnecessary. I think it's time more people called circumcision mutilation so we can stop this barbaric practice.
