Prior to the massive decline in religiosity, Europeans were having more children on average, and the concept of a nuclear family hadn’t broken down yet. If I got into an accident that resulted in complications where I’d be worth more dead than alive, or flat out died, I’d still appreciate having lived, even if I didn’t live very long. If you just operate under “I’m gonna live in whatever way gives me most pleasure”, what does pleasure mean? Why play video games, listen to music, read, have nice conversations with people, or do whatever you consider enjoyable if pleasure doesn’t really mean anything in of itself?
