The men likely have higher sex drives at that point in their life cycle. Plus children are no longer an option for women by that stage, so unless they're interested in adopting a family is out. Women also tend to be more intimate with their female friends and this provides an emotional outlet than men don't have with their middle-aged, frequently settled buddies.
