Its a thing that (I think) keeps a lot of shitty marriages together, because the two can't afford to split up stuff and separate. Mostly though, it is to prevent hiding assets just like the story says. I have known a few people who hated each other but literally couldn't afford to live apart so they just shared a house and went their own ways and did whatever they wanted.
