The goal is this: Sex and parenthood are a serious matter. Making children is not child's play. Therefore, getting rid of this responsability shouldn't be easy. It is difficult for women and it should be difficult for men too. In my opinion, out of the blue, I said 10000 dollars for dropping parenthood rights. You said this is too much. Do you have some numbers to back that up? I don't think this is the particular issue addressed. The issue is this: "The child is yours. You did him. Do you have a right to renounce this right?" I would say there are two sub-issues: 1) You wanted the child initially but don't want it anymore and 2) You didn't want it from the get-go. This particular issue is discussed by sixofthebest above. It is a very difficult issue, for sure, but not the main issue. The main issue is issue (1) from above.

The reason why I said is tricky is because this is a very complex issue. While it does have the number of cromosomes, a lot of other things are quite false. For example is it alive? This is a tricky discussion whether abortion is killing or not. I for one consider it killing, but I generally think that it should be allowed. I think that if a woman wants to have an abortion, usually there are quite solid grounds for it. Most women wouldn't have an abortion if they could afford it... Edit: There was an interesting book a while ago. Freakonomics. I think you can read one chapter of that book on abortion and the positive effect it has on society. :)

The problem in my opinion is that the father doesn't have the same kind of risks in this period as the mother. I know that with modern medicine, these risks are reduced, but nevertheless they are still there. That is why in my opinion it probably wouldn't be really as fair as it sounds at first.
