I'm not sure of what exactly happened in your situation. I will say, in general, there does need to a build-up to an asking of such. They are being selfless for selfish reasons, even worse, they're being deceptive and manipulative about it. No one (guy or girl) appreciates being deceived or lied to. alleged "jerks" are more upfront about what they want and who they are (really they're called "jerks" out of jealously from nice guys).

I always say: Don't be a "nice guy" be a "Great guy"! "Jerks" (at least most often) is a label guys call guys who get female attention and are downright jealous.
