A year and a half in. My lawyer says it takes 2 to mediate and she doesn’t want to. She kept the house, I live in an Airbnb that my daughter says doesn’t feel like home, so she never comes. I will see her maybe 3x a year, but pay my child support monthly even tho my ex is an executive whose bonus is almost half my salary. I expect financial ruin and lost friends in the divorce. I haven’t been accused of sexual assault, but had to dodge a staged DV and still managed to have to defend a restrainin…

Ha, this is me, and my future. We coulda retired and paid for kids’ college. She chose divorce. Interested in how you got reamed so bad. I expect it, based on everything I’ve seen from family court so far. I’d just like to know what to expect. And I’m laughing incredulously. Sorry man.

This is the truth. And child support and alimony are for fathers to pay.

Yeah, good for you. I’m old. I want instant gratification.

Very aware of this possibility. Very aware that I’m attaching as a distraction and when this burns out I’m going to get hit in the face with both. But remember Samuel Jackson…”aw man you killed my surfer girl”? I’m not going to let you (and your sage and informed warning that I should listen to) kill my punk rock girl. I’m 50+. I’m looking at a limp dick fixed by pills hawked by mike ditka and creepy Dole for post menopausal pussy in the near future. Don’t kill my punk rock girl. Granted: you di…

Yes. I got attention from others and it did nothing. Message: Put checks in place.

Women will cost you everything if you don’t keep yourself in check, right?

All true. I’m in the 50+ group, so take that 20-yo 6+/10 who’s interests are shopping and a real man who’s honest and blah blah blah for duck face and down blouse pics, but make her3 decades older, worn out, sad, and wrinkly, you have 50+ tinder. Women with nothing left to give trying what got them their first husband. I’m into Latinas. Figured I go down to Mexico, find something hot there, Chad it around for a while, end up hanging from an overpass because her tío was cartel, and be good with i…

Oh no, got one. He's saying no VA needed for her. 3 years ago she made >4x my income, 2021 was 5x mine, last year back to 4x. Reporting her income as just her base puts her at about 2.5x mine, and I figure an incompetent VA could get me able to make 2/3rd to 1.5x her income. At least that's the story she's selling right now in her initial court filings.

Sorry man. But this is basically what I'm asking--she's lowballing her income. I don't see how she can get away with it. Not that I think you're lowballing yours--that's not what I meant. Just BS that the court will get a VA on me and then give her a pass on support now that I raised the kids and don't need to stay at home anymore.

My catch-22 is that I like my job and want to stick with it for a few more years until I retire, but it's not enough to live on where STBX lives. Ain't leaving until the kid is done with high school tho, so gotta have some sort of work. Afraid the VA is going to say I need to quit the job I have and go get another, or STBX will convice the court that she's the poor wife.

Have a job, just doesn't make as much as STBX wants it to make.

yep. That, and it needs to have enough separate rooms so there's no issue for custody. I've been a saver and tightwad all my life and now I'm throwing money out the door to get a divorce. o well, it's what she wanted.

Don't know, but my executive STBX said her income on her financial disclosure was just her base, and ignored that she made almost 2-3x that on her last 2 W2s, then held her hat in her hand and claimed she was barely able to keep up with the expenses to keep up the house. She is currently on a work/vacation trip with kids and mom in Europe. Lawyer has told me to rent an equivalent residence no matter what the cost. We're going to temporary motions hearing in a week, then mediation in June. I have…

Sorry guys. You aren't alone in wanting to be a dad and having your STBX doing everything she can to fuck that up, I mean, in the best interest of the kids.

If the stock market is down 20% and I offer you half the value of the shares I own in cash and I keep the stocks, is that a good deal for you? So we bought $10,000 in stock, it's now worth $8000, I'll give you $4000 and keep the stock. I'm comfy so I keep my investment, but you have to go spend your $2000 of yours on food. When the stock rebounds, I have $6000 and you have $2000. Instead, we cash out the stock and each get $4000. You have the option of keeping your stock. Even if you sell $2000,…

Career path led here, in part (I can argue) because I followed her and her career. It's also for the same reason that some doctors go into family practice instead of them all going into plastic surgery. It's good work, needs to be done. The buyout v sell is more of a financial and practical matter. She gets an asset that appreciates at a much greater rate than what I get, and I have to spend down what I get to survive.

Right, so she maneuvered her way into staying in the house and can afford to refinance. I won't because of my income. I'll ask for alimony but what I get vs what I can live off of I'm guessing are going to be pretty different. Feeling like I'm getting pigeonholed into living somewhere where the kid won't want to stay (too small and depressing or too far from school) or racking up debt and living beyond my means.

She put her income in as what her paycheck says, but her W2 for the last 2 years has been 2x her base. From that, CS is enough to cover groceries. There are no spousal guidelines here (UT) and her lawyer is telling me to "get a job"...I mean, yeah, I have one, it just doesn't pay that well. So I'm assuming that I'm not going to come out with enough to even cover rent. My kid's in high school next year, so I just have to tread water for 4 years before I can move to a low COL area. Lawyer got me t…

Yeah, I have a lawyer. The way I see this working tho is he throws a huge number out, STBX throws out a tiny number, many billable hours go by, and some middle number is reached. I'm trying to be realistic: that number is going to be "Fair for SAHM minus penis penalty = some number too small for me to really support myself living where STBX will be able to easily afford our former house, vacations, and stuff for kids while I eat beans in a 1 BR and hope kids actually want to come see sad dad in …

Would be gratifying, but I'm counting on living off the equity to survive for a while.

Yep, lawyer had that talk with me too. I followed her and supported her career, she belitteled my work. Now of course my career could be worth 2x what I'm earning if I weren't so lazy. If I can get 4 years support to cover rent I'll draw down savings that I'm going to get when we sell the house and maybe get by. If support was more reasonable I'd work out a way for her to stay in the house. Or I'll probably just get fucked. That's how if feels anyway.

I'm in my 50's, I was a SAHD during the pandemic, and while I'm trying like hell to get back into the workforce, I worked in nonprofit, so I always made about 1/2 of what she made. Same. I am close to retirement, well, was. What do your prospects for support look like? Lawyer is trying to at least get my rent paid since STBX wanted me to stay nearby for 50-50 custody, but coming from being SAHD, working in a nonprofit while taking care of kids, even with support living in high COL area with what…

Ya man, perspective: many of us are fighting for our kids while our STBX poisons them because she has them most or all of the time, we're scrambling to find a place to live that we can afford and where our kids can visit, if STBX will allow it and they want to, and we're running up credit card debt to have a lawyer tell us how fucked we are. Get a lawyer and do everything he says to make sure the situation you are in never changes. Kids are all that matters.
