I always figured it was because being sick is one of the few times guys can be "babied" without feeling emasculated. The case could also be made that it is more apparent when a man (who is in theory expected to be strong and a rock) is laid low by illness than when it's a woman (for whom frailty is supposedly acceptable). While it may happen equally, the male example sticks out in people's minds. Just a thought.
