Very true! I definitely think it was for convenience since her parents were paying for their apartment. Other than embarrassment and a broken heart, she got out of that situation relatively unscathed. In fact, not even 3 years later, she married a replica of him and appears to be happy. So she is also an example of not being influenced by sunk cost fallacy and getting out of a bad situation as fast as possible. It’s really tempting to want to approach the reserved attractive guy, but as you said…

This is sooo true. I remember an old classmate of mine approached the finest man to ever walk into our local university bar. We all broke our necks to look at him but she was the fastest one to take initiative and start a conversation. He later became her boyfriend and eventually her husband. (Side note, she is also really pretty and super accomplished). We kept using her as an example of “you should go after what you want” and “don’t sit back and let life happen to you.” Well, after dating for …

Always plan a screening call or FaceTime prior to meeting in person for the date. Some are too lazy to set that up, which is a win for you. Many that make it that far don’t even bother to make a good impression during the call. Low effort = easy elimination.

Keep your head up sis! This lesson hits hard but it is soo freeing. When we start paying attention to the most important person—ourselves—that’s when we can focus our time on leveling up instead of being used by those around us.

Please just block him. He doesn’t deserve another moment of your time. His voice was so smug and irritating. Men are out here with the audacity on another level. Maybe covid did something to their brains.

So sorry that happened to you. Now I understand why my parents never let me sleep over anyone’s house when I was growing up.

The heart of a woman is just so pure. Too bad that it gets wasted on trash the majority of the time.

What a loser for real. I’m sure he has absolutely nothing of substance to talk about.

I’ve always said that working moms are the real MVPs. I can’t imagine working + taking care of anyone but myself during this pandemic. My mental health would massively decline if I had any additional responsibilities.

Seriously, thank god for FDS. I tried the FWB situation with a guy I knew I would never be interested in romantically (he was younger/less established) but who expressed interest in me. The sex was terrible the first time (lasted less than one minute) but I thought it was a fluke and we should try again. This man never wanted to try again. I kept dropping hints, and homeboy was not interested. Talk about a hit to the self-esteem. I’m getting rejected by a man who I don’t even want to date? I was…

She capitalized on people who were down to exploit her. All these friends were happy to go out or travel on her dime. It is cautionary tale to “despise the free lunch.” I don’t care how rich a friend is, I’m contributing something. She had a great read on people and was a master manipulator. Even her con artist boyfriend was no match. I admire her boldness. Say what you want about her morals, but she certainly had a gift and probably would have been a successful con artist had she not targeted t…

He must have wrote this while high. Even someone with the lowest self esteem would not work for free. There are laws to protect against this kind of exploitation— many companies are turning away from the “no pay” internships due to the potential liability. LVM really do tell on themselves.

For real! I was told they did an investigation and found no fraud when someone clearly was making small purchases with my debit card (now I thoroughly examine my statements). I didn’t have the energy to keep trying to fight it. Amazing how this would get written off.

This is sooo important. This kind of negging can go noticed if you aren’t paying attention to how you feel. I had a guy friend who kept commenting on all these women who were trying to come back in his life now that they were “older and nobody wanted them.” He would always comment on how he feels sorry for older women (women in mid to late thirties) because dating is so much harder for them. It made me feel like he was trying to create an insecurity in me because I was in my early 30s and single…

This is a great post. All the heartache that I could have avoided had I left the moment a man made me feel off. I know many of us say that it takes about 3 months for the mask to slip but when I really examine all my relationships where the guy “had no red flags” or seemed so perfect, there were glaring red flags in the first few weeks. I just liked the person so much that I made excuses for those red flags. No more googling and researching reasons for poor behavior or whether it is a personalit…

If you take them back after cheating, then they will just find a bigger and more public way to humiliate you (i.e., Wendy Williams and Khloe Kardashian). Let’s normalize one and done when it comes to cheating. These fools are really surprised when a woman doesn’t take them back because that’s “out of the norm.”

I’ve heard more bad stories than good. I would definitely avoid if the relationship starts with the person needing status. If you’re in a relationship and the person falls out of status after some years, I think that is a much better scenario, but people can plan years in advance so always be cautious. I dated a guy who was on a student visa for b-school and he maintained his status through work after graduating. He never brought up marriage/visa. We had a rocky relationship so it would have bee…

Absolutely, the best advice! This is exactly why he discarded me. A woman made an odd comment to us as we were walking by. It was obvious she knew him. He denied knowing her but I was annoyed and wouldn’t let the incident go. I then added him on Facebook to find out more about him and he wouldn’t accept my request. Within a week of the initial incident, he dumped me saying he lost all feelings for me. He clearly didn’t like my investigative efforts. How do you go from lovebombing on 100 to absol…

Yes, I did google to see if it was true at the time. I still didn’t have any obligation to honor his request. Like you said, men here are mostly noncommittal, so I welcomed the French way of dating. If it happened today, I would just hold off on kissing lol.

This list is excellent but I will add that extremely smart psychopaths know how to add the personal touches to the love bombing. If you remain vigilant the red flags will show. I once dated a guy (he was model fine and had a beautiful French accent) who listened to my favorite podcasts and read a very dense book that I was reading in order to discuss them with me. He also educated himself on topics that mattered to me. I was sooo impressed by the effort. He also gifted me these really unique big…

Sooo true! I’m so grateful that I know that it is up to me to set up my life so that I’m cared for in my old age and in sickness. If I ever get married, we will plan so that he will have outsourced care as well. I have a friend whose father just died (3 months after her mother’s death). The kids put him in an expensive nursing home because nobody had time to take care of him. Her mother was taking care of her father for 10 years while he had dementia and had deteriorated to the point he was blin…

Omg, this is sooo true. For those of you who watch Love and Hip Hop NY (my guilty pleasure), do you remember when Mendecee said that he doesn’t know if he would be able to wait for Yandy if the situation was reversed and she was in prison? Yandy held him down and took care of their family for four years while he was in prison. I would have divorced his ass after publicly embarrassing me with that comment. He probably hoped that Yandy would leave him and now feels he has to do the right thing and…

I’m now on high alert for negging (thanks FDS). It’s hilarious to me when you spot it even with men you’re not dating. There is a security guard in my building who I’m friendly with and I occasionally stop and chat because he is really personable. Well, he started being inappropriate by calling my phone just to chat. I stopped answering his calls to set a boundary. The next time that I saw him, he told me that I had gained a few pounds (I’m 115 lbs). He tried to make it sound like a compliment b…

Bullet dodged! It sounds like he was proud of his cheating so at least it was easy to spot the red flag. Back when I was a pickme, a guy revealed to me that he cheated on his ex-wife and then long term girlfriend on the first date. He was nearly in tears about how much regret he had on treating them this way. My 🤡self thought at least he is being honest, and it would be judgmental of me to stop seeing him because of his honesty. He was a serial cheater and I could have protected myself had I lis…

I haven’t gone on a date in a little over one year. I recently had 3 pre-date video calls after I reactivated my OLD profile again. The pre-date call is a game changer, as I discovered none of these guys were suitable to advance to an actual date. One guy basically revealed he was an alcoholic (“I can drink 7 drinks and not be drunk but the last girl I was dating stopped seeing me because she thought it was unhealthy” 🚩). Another guy hung up on me when I told him that I only have sex when I’m in…

We need to bring back the feeling of shame. We are allowing men to feel no shame for their disgusting behavior.

This is terrifying. So glad you are okay. One thing this sub has taught me is to stop giving men the benefit of the doubt. My therapist told me that this is a rigid way to live but self-preservation should always come first.

Sociopaths get a high off duper’s delight. This level of deception is actually enjoyable for them. I had a friend who was a major pick me who dated a sociopath. He ditched her on a Valentine’s weekend getaway with other couples because his “cousin died.” When she asked him to send the obituary so she could get a refund on the trip that she paid for, he got mad at her and accused her of calling him a liar. He never sent the obituary. He also stood her up on their wedding day (you can’t even make …

I’m really sorry this happened to you. It’s extremely disappointing when you respect someone in your field who is much older and they turn around and pull this mess. Make sure you have all your evidence in case things turn ugly. Collect additional evidence by recording your next conversation just in case (check your state laws on whether one party consent is allowed).I’m sure he is sweating now that you haven’t reciprocated his feelings. Sadly, these things are common. I had an 82 year old profe…

So sad. Reminds me of a case a few years back of 26 y/o Lyric McHenry who died of an overdose (that occurred under shady circumstances) and some men/drug dealers dumped her body on the road instead of taking her to the hospital. That story can be found here. Never take drugs from men or people you don’t know. Really, just don’t take drugs period. Not worth it.

This! Especially if you have an “exotic” look. I’m also extremely cautious of non black men who only date black women. I remember one latino guy (who I met through a match making service that he paid for) revealed in our second convo that he was bipolar which was extremely disappointing because he was attractive, successful and really nice. He mentioned that all his past girlfriends were black women, which made me wonder if he targeted black women because he thought we are more likely to put up …

All of this! When I told my married friend that I’m going to stop dating and level up because men have added nothing to my life and I’m not sure I want children, she had the nerve to make me sound delusional and asked me if I spoke to my therapist about this. I hit her with the facts that single women live longer than married women but the opposite is true for single men vs married men. I haven’t talked to her since that conversation nearly six months ago. What I said must have been very trigger…

High salary does not equal HVM. I’m an attorney and the number of high salary LVM out there is ridiculous. There was one year that it seemed that all I dated was finance guys. Two of those guys asked me my salary within the first few dates. Could you imagine if I had asked a man that on a date? One of these guys later became an acquaintance since we knew the same people and he revealed that he was looking to date a woman so he could split the rent because he was too old to live with roommates. A…

For real! I remember when I was friends with this finance guy who would always pay for dinner/drinks when we went out. He would occasionally send flowers to my work and made it known he was interested. I was trying to decide if I even liked him on a romantic level. Then he started getting pushy about DTR and I decided I wasn’t interested, and then the mask slipped. Do you know this man sent me a bullet point list of everything that he paid for?? This fool, who was supposedly making serious money…

Omg, he reminds me so much of this partner at my law firm who wanted to “mentor me” my first year. I thought it was weird because we weren’t in the same group but I figured it is always good to build relationships within the firm. We had lunch once a month, and he slowly started discussing how unhappy he was in his marriage 🤮. I hated meeting with him and never reached out, but like clockwork he would email me every month for our lunch. Other associates started noticing that his face would “ligh…

Literally my last dating experience. Guy presented like a HVM for exactly 3.5 months. I thought I hit the jackpot (back in my pickmeisha days) but then he slowly started unleashing his RP tactics on me. I didn’t know what was going on. I was sooo confused. At first I tried harder to make things better between us, but then when he started openly being disrespectful (i.e., not returning my calls the same day, checking out women in front of me and hanging with his ex), I kicked his ass to the curb.…
