You can't be a small or weak person and be a good pilot. Also the army isn't going to enlist someone and send them through boot camp if they can't send you to an active war zone at any time. Military leadership figured out many decades ago that taking only the best soldiers, even if that means less manpower, is better than taking everyone since in a combat scenario, it can be a downside to have less than optimal scenarios because it puts more stress on the well performing soldiers.
