It should be noted, innocent by reason of insanity is NOT getting off freely. When they say "ordered to receive treatment" they mean "committed to a mental ward for an undetermined amount of time" - it's entirely possible she'll be there for most of her life. This is not a pussy pass, there's a reason you don't see many insanity pleas in real life.

Especially since, at that age, there's already close scrutiny on drivers, at least where I come from. Yearly checks to keep your licence since sight and mental problems are more likely to crop up later in life.

Read the rest of the article. The judge awarded damages based on her change of behaviour after the accident, which included a significant personality change. The title is pretty much clickbait.

Context is important for everything, not caring about the why is what's blind about what you're saying. "Wait till some rehabilitated murderer rapes your wife and kills your kids" is more than a bit ad hominem - if we accept that they're a murderer, then raping my wife would be a bit out-of-character for them, and simply saying "they're all beyond help" is why the US has such an overcrowded prison system. You seem to think that I'm 'rehabilitating' with some magic pixie dust and wishes, before t…

Your examples sound like sociopaths, in which case, it's a mental disorder which can and should be treated (Specifically Bilal Skaf, it's clear there's something wrong with him, but no, let's not make an attempt at giving him mental help, even for the good of the community, just lock him up and forget about him for thirty years - what happens when he gets released?). Besides, you're using the most extreme examples to discredit the whole thing. The classic "is it wrong to steal a loaf of bread to…

So the obvious question is, why did they murder? Serial killer? Needs institutionalised psychiatric help. Heat of the moment? Serious anger management. A prison sentence of 20 years means nothing if you don't do anything to help them in that time, you've just let them stew with a few hundred other offenders while barring them from any other contact. I'm not suggesting that these people shouldn't be locked up at the time, but blindly advocating punishment is how you get career criminals.

That sounds uncomfortably like eugenics.

The reverse gender test is a good metric for a lot of the stories here - would it be reasonable for this to happen to a man? Most of the stories here are legitimate, but never start taking them for granted.

Seems to have slapped someone who showed her a picture of an aborted fetus while she was pregnant. Still not justifiable, but emotional distress seems like a valid reason for the penalty reduction.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
