It means to treat women first and foremost like sexual creatures, especially in situations where that's not appropriate. Catcalling me on the street, winking at me at work, or not taking me seriously because you think I'm cute.

It's actually been, on the whole, a fruitful, intelligent discussion!

It's pretty much a no-holds-barred, image-based sub dedicated to finding the humor in common female experiences and issues. We talk about the pains of dating and cramps, our love of cats, makeup, cute clothes, and being strong, independent, awesome women! (Although, men and trans folks are welcome too!) It's a super friendly community and not as serious-minded/angry as TwoX.

I'm sorry that was your experience! This post was not perfect, but was about reminding us that we should turn stereotypes on their heads. Everyone's experience of gender roles and relations is different, that's why this is such a difficult and complicated issue.

Might make for a good story. I'm actually a journalist btw.

I think the He for She campaign was well-intentioned. It basically said "it's ok to be a dude and be a feminist too. No one is going to take away your man card." I personally think Emma Watson has a lot of great ideas.

I understand that the word patriarchy has negative connotations. I did not mean it in the way you think I did. I have also found a better word: kyriarchy.

I totally agree that religion is holding us back. I consider myself an agnostic. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Thanks. I really enjoyed the discussion although it was a bit overwhelmig considering the amount of response I got! The majority of folks here respected my opinion even if they didn't agree. Great for a healthy debate. I will certainly visit here more often. I have also learned a lot. I certainly did not know about the controversy with NOW and paternity rights/alimony. Yikes! Here's a victory we can all appreciate: Netflix offerig maternity and paternity leave. That's pretty darn awesome.

Thank you so much! I have lurked here before but never posted. I won't get to respond to everyone because this whole thing has blown up. Btw, the ladies at TwoX are happy I posted this, and are enjoying reading the discussion.

I definitely agree that on a large scale the wage gap is mostly a myth, however, I and several of my female colleagues have experienced gender discrimination in the workplace. But yes, on the whole we definitely have almost closed that gap.

I've never heard of feminists doing that, and I'm sorry that's been your experience. I personally am an advocate for men's issues as well.

Actually the dictionary definition of feminism is, "the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men."

All of my friends (male and female), and most women I have met in my lifetime consider themselves feminists and they are not misandrists or crazy. I think you're really being a bit hateful here, dude. We want the same things you do. The definition of patriarchy by the way, is "a system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line." For the most part, this is still true, although of course we've all made huge strides…

I think about it like majoring in college. Just because I majored in English, doesn't mean my other non-English courses were shit/unimportant. I took an astronomy class that I found to be fascinating. I lean toward feminism because the issues interest me, and directly affect me as a woman, just like a gay man or lesbian may lean toward an LGBT perspective. There's nothing wrong with that.

Fair enough. I respect your ideas, although I still believe we live in a society where the "default" switch is on men as successful providers and women as caretakers, hence the term patriarchal society. I actually thought of a better reason why I call myself a feminist. I answered it elsewhere on this thread, but here it is: "Here's my two cents on feminism vs. egalitarianism: Feminism is equality from a women's rights perspective. Men's rights is equality from a masculine perspective. Egalitari…

Here's my two cents on feminism vs. egalitarianism: Feminism is equality from a women's rights perspective. Men's rights is equality from a masculine perspective. Egalitarianism is gender/race/sexual orientation-neutral. I may focus on women's rights because it's my political interest/I am a lady, AND you may focus on men's rights for the same reason on the opposite end of the spectrum. There is overlap, and in an ideal world both groups would get along, but then you have extreme feminazis who s…

I agree with you, and I have no problem with debate. It's just a bit annoying to get automatically downvoted after I comment. The downvote button is for making a ridiuclous/off-topic point; it's not about disagreement.

I agree. But I didn't write this. I just think it's a fairly good (though imperfect) illustration of how Men's Rights and Feminists can come together!

Thanks so much for your kind comment! I'm not too sure on that one...would have to see historically how disregarding stereotypes has worked. And yeah, it's definitely true about taking the lead. Every time I've texted a guy first, he loses interest! Ugh!

Okay, well I tried having a conversation and I keep getting downvoted no matter what I say. I'd still love to have a conversation and reach some common ground with anyone. Please feel free to PM me and we can have a friendly debate/discussion.

I'm not really sure if it was saying you're obligated to help a stranger. But I'd say you may be obligated to help a friend or girlfriend who is too drunk/feeling unsafe, or at least call them a cab.

Because feminism comes from the notion that we (men and women) are trying to free ourselves from the archaic idea of a patriarchy, which affects both genders. I'd like to quote a favorite blog post of mine on this subject: "The reason for a distinguishable feminism is that in egalitarianisms and humanisms past, women were significantly left out. People didn’t automatically understand that egalitarianism or humanism meant all humans. They were capable of saying “all men are created equal” and cal…

I definitely agree with you on some points. Gender roles/sexism/gender equality are all complicated issues, and this simplifies it a bit. BUT I'm not so sure that it's enforcing gender roles. I think this Tumblr user is trying to say, "Hey! Guys can be emotional and women can be tough, etc." We'd be better off as a society if we based our perceptions of someone on the wealth of their character/their personality rather than their gender. I personally think it's shitty that custody automatically g…
