It has been for decades. Decreasing marriage rates are probably the biggest reason diamond sales are dropping but not the only reason. Diamonds are not actually that rare but a couple firms have held a virtual monopoly over them for over a century. As such they could artificially increase the price and the traditional wedding ring is mostly a product of their advertising. In my state it is actually fairly common for fist offenders to get probation and mandatory counseling.
