The last third of the article makes it clear he was not just stating opposition, but making quite a scene in more than one class meeting. And, if you'd read the article, you'd find gems like this: The entire conference without exception, men as well as women, feel that your presence makes them uncomfortable enough that they would rather not be there if you are there So "who?" is not just women. And, as a fellow MRA, you are well aware that men, too, are sexually assaulted. I am a male college st…

It's pretty clear from the article that it wasn't just him debating a statistic, but a series of incidents in which he got more heated and disrespectful. I don't care how 'right' you might be, any student who is disrupting a class over the course of several sessions -- to the point that every single student in the class told the professor they weren't comfortable -- needs to be jettisoned. One loudmouth does not get to decide what the class is; that's the professor's job.

My strongest case is this: it's a term that many people in support networks use, so it carries more of a connotation of healing, and it sounds more forward-thinking than "victim." Call it what you want; I just think OP came across dickish.

Don't worry, it's right in there. at first, True’s “controversial” points were welcomed and prompted interesting discussions. . . Eventually, Clara said, True’s arguments went from productive to “increasingly harmful and offensive.” the turning point was when he refused to stop discussing his beliefs on rape, even though sexual assault survivors told him outside of class that it made them uncomfortable. In response to being respectfully asked to stop, he discussed [his views] more openly and mor…

I certainly felt victimized, but defining myself as a victim seems very focused on what someone else did to me and doesn't carry the same implication that I'm going somewhere beyond that. Are you a sexual assault victim? Just curious. If you're not, I just don't see why it bothers you so much.

It's empowering because it's a phrase that a lot of people I know use to identify ourselves, and we are all there for each other. You know, like a community thing, where we share a sense of identity? We say we "survived" because it implies that we are not going to fall into a pit of self-victimization, but that we are gonna truck on and face life. That being the rational part of my response, fuck you. How do you know I didn't do anything? Were you there when that guy was violating me? Do you kno…

I'm sure he will be in front of Reed's Honor Council very soon. The class is the professor's turf; if a student is being disruptive to the point that the class is losing value, that student does not need to be in the class. Edit: As far as the teacher knowing "that would not fly," you are suddenly making a bunch of assertions. Having spent time at Reed, which has an extremely non-traditional judiciary committee, I am quite certain it would "fly"

I'm a male sexual assault survivor and being sexually assaulted sucks. Rape is not fun; for most it causes serious psychological damage that fucks with you for a long, long time. I'm still not comfortable during sex more than a year and a lot of therapy later. But that's okay; don't let me use some self-empowering language. Would you prefer I say "victim of sexual assault" or "person who had his asshole violated by a stranger" or what?

My lovely little refrain: read the article, then you can talk about it ^

No they can't. What the fuck kind of feminists do you know? Are you sure you're not thinking of the two loud ones in the sea of hundreds of fucking rational and normal people?

Yes, you a.) always need to be respectful, and b.) you absolutely need to be respectful when you are telling people about experiences they themselves have had, like being raped. Sexual assault isn't fun; it can really fuck you up like it did me.

Not "simply discussing." Read the article, not the headline.

ITT: a bunch of people who didn't read the article closely*. It's clear that True was not just presenting critical views and discussions on rape and rape culture, but that he repeatedly got out of hand doing it. If you act like an asshole enough that everyone else can't focus on the class, then you deserve to be ejected. As a male survivor of college sexual assault, I can definitely assure you that it is a problem and that many more people have been sexually assaulted than you probably think. I …

If you read the article, it's fairly clear that True's arguments about rape were not just a handful of thought-provoking discussions, which they acknowledge were beneficial, but progressed to more aggressive arguments. Getting heated about a debate in a class is fine; but being an asshole, especially about personal experiences from your peers, is not.

Does anyone wonder why people think seddit is a misogyny shithole?

Thank you for this post. I'm more of a passive observer of seddit; but I've seen the trends that you pointed out and it was starting to worry me. The idea of seddit is beautiful, but it's frustrating that techniques like these are getting turned into manipulative tools rather than ways to improve social situations. I love ya, sedditors, and hope this helps keep the community strong.

Improving yourself != becoming an alpha I sincerely hope you don't think this way.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
