No, they're saying that if this current situation were reversed, it'd be big outrage news everywhere. Imagine if "[wife] loses case against tabloid where she was incorrectly called an abuser, then subsequently loses her job" happened, after it's come out and is well-known that she was abused by her husband. While said husband thrives in their career. This wouldn't even occur because she'd get her job back instantly, and then some.

Not much, really. A station in Australia is no longer airing her show. The show itself isn't "canceled" in any regard. The stuff she did, after the Internet Warriors tried to sleuth stuff from her? Bad boss. Nothing illegal or sexual or anything. Cancel culture running amok.

I'd venture that most people are decent people. A lot of places online are just collection points for the crazy stuff. Then you get replies akin to "wow I'm never moving to America everyone's crazy there!!!" or whatnot. Crazy is the minority in most situations. Most people just want to live normal lives and have common courtesy.

This -- "sign petition to kick her off the air", is 100% cancel culture. Crosses from "I don't like it / don't want to watch it" to "you should get fired / no-one can watch it."

The person you replied to is wrong. It's not some vindictive system that is meant to give prosecutors all the chips. It's just the laws that are written. If you break laws X, Y, and Z, then you will get charged and sentenced for laws X, Y, and Z. This is why the whole concept of concurrent/consecutive sentences exist: So that these things don't end up stacking against you.

Twitter and email also immediately come to mind, and both of them are a lot more popular than Reddit. Drop the whole Reddit comparison. You keep bringing it up, I don't. Reddit is not the first, and won't be the last, online site to have threaded commenting. Twitter and Email are not examples -- you don't have to quote/copy the entire tweet/email in order to leave a comment. Newsgroups either. Tumblr had comments, and they made a mistake in getting rid of them, period.

Tumblr is basically attempting to go against what users have been doing with online content, that is, commenting, for decades. Literally since the public Internet's inception. Newsgroups didn't require you to post new threads to make comment. Every single blog engine that has existed, dating back to earlier ones (LiveJournal et al) do not require new threads. Discussion boards (PHPBB, EZBoard, name any other one) do not …
