Critically it got pretty good reviews, and the director's cut is much better. Certainly has it's problems, like the aforementioned moron characters, but of all the criticism it did receive, none of it was because it had a female lead. ​ Then in Alien Covenant they just kill her off screen for no good reason.

I'm afraid that's a very naive view. Just because someone is legally in a position of power, doesn't mean they are psychologically. Yes, I've worked in that field and the possibility of inmates manipulating staff, regardless of gender, is taken very seriously. You're told on your first day to never get close to any of them or do a favour, no matter how innocuous it may seem. Some of these people are very clever at manipulating and using people to their own advantage, and they all have nothing but time on their hands to plan how to do it.

Flying any aircraft in ww2 was a dangerous past time. The men who flew transport or maritime patrol aircraft suffered low casualties, doesn't make what they did any less important or worthy of mention. Why can we not remember everyone who did so, regardless of gender?
