I agree, but I think it's something we should be pushing back against. Puritanism in its various forms is the enemy of freedom. I imagine that most people here are conservatives, and it's a mistake for them to take up the arms of the opposition, in the misguided belief that they can use them on equal terms.

In general I don’t think employers should be able to use your social media posts to discriminate against you as an employee unless it’s directly relevant to the performance of your job, eg posting about being drunk at work. What I do in my personal time is largely none of my employer’s business. And while good personal habits about privacy can help, employer surveillance of employees (including via automated methods) is rapidly expanding to the point where it poses a threat to individual Liberty…

That’s specifically a case where religion is relevant to the performance of your job. Voluntary association only works if you have a society that’s reasonably tolerant of differences of opinion and ideology. As it is, I think we’re headed for a world in which anyone who has eg expressed any sympathy for Trump is likely to find themselves blacklisted. Hell, it wouldn’t surprise me if some people posting here ending up losing on out on jobs for their political views, especially as tech makes it to…

Immutable characteristics is a bad test, it seems to me; religion is not immutable, but an employer who refuses to hire any practicing Jewish person is clearly violating the spirit of employment protections. The same is true of political ideology - employers eg shouldn’t be able to refuse to hire Republicans, even though political affiliation is not immutable.

If a guy doesn’t want to date a woman who’s done sex work or nude modelling in the past, that seems like a reasonable preference, but employers should be held to a higher standard of impartiality. If it’s not relevant to the performance of your job and it’s long enough in the past not to clearly demonstrate anything about your moral character, your employer shouldn’t be able to discriminate for it, whether it’s sex work, edgy blogposts from when you’re a teen, or an arrest for marijuana possessi…

Honestly I don’t see why it’s relevant for most jobs if someone’s sold nude photos in the past.

Really cool piece, but I have to quote from it - The results, the authors say, offer couples a range of different approaches that could boost the frequency of orgasms, particularly among women. “Women really are tremendously variable in how readily they orgasm and what makes one woman orgasm can be quite different than what makes another woman orgasm,” said Frederick. “Explicit and direct communication with one’s partner is key.” Explicit and direct communication is really hard for many couples,…

Actually we don’t get off on wildly different things Funnily enough I think straight men would be a better judge of this than straight women. Among my previous long term female sex partners, there's been massive variety in preferences. Sure, stuff like oral is broadly popular (duh) but not universal, eg one ex found oral in any form way too intense unless it happened after PIV. Another partner could get close to climax just from breast play (one time she made it all the way). A couple of girls I…

In addition to spending about half my time with my wife, most of my close friends are women, although several of these are exes who I'm on good terms with. My two closest friends are men, although that's partly due to the fact that I have a bunch of stereotypically male hobbies (lifting, videogaming, military history) so that my close male friends are especially valuable to me in that regard. But on a day to day basis I'd say 60% of my social interactions (not including pure work stuff) are with…

This makes a lot of intuitive sense. But do you have an explanation for the shifts in sexual behaviour, ie less of it for young men and women, but a much more precipitous drop for men? The "one hotter dude" phenomenon isn't new.

I don't know that I buy all the assumptions the OP is making but I agree with the conclusion; looking back over my early dating career I made so many mistakes - oneitis, clinginess, being oblivious to indicators of interest, edginess, etc.. Maybe I was just a social retard but I have single friends who are still making similar blunders into their 30s. But through bitter and long experience I became better at anticipating how my actions would be perceived, at picking up on subtle messaging, and i…

I meant to distinguish between pure displacement activities - e.g. going out and getting miserably drunk at the bar every night, netflix bingeing on shows you've watched ten times before - from those forms of escapism that provide genuine serious pleasure. Mine are of the latter type. But I absolutely take the broader point - if I only had a few hours left to live, I doubt I'd want to spend them playing videogames.

That's a good link, thanks for sharing. You're 100% right that escapism runs through my life - videogames, models, booze, even more commendable stuff like reading a shit ton of history - and has done since I was a teenager (although much less so when I was single and looking - I was very conscious then of nurturing hobbies that 'looked cool'). It's not just a consequence of a narrow window of experience either - I've travelled widely, speak multiple languages, and had lots of romantic relationsh…

Two years ago I took my dream job, leaving a tough demanding job in a big city for a small town in the process. While the job has been great, I've coasted a bit in my life since moving - put on weight, slacked off exercise, put in a regular amount of effort/hours at work rather than finding ways to distinguish myself. The worryingly conclusion I'm coming to is that I'm no longer as ambitious as I want to be. Via the change in environments I've somehow dropped the ball and lost my hunger. But for…

Grunge surprisingly had some very nice looks that balanced more traditional feminine clothes (eg babydoll dress) with fun alternative elements (eg Doc Martens) - see here for example. May not be your style but could perhaps provide some inspiration.

It seems the overwhelming consensus here is that it'll be harder. That probably fits with current trends. I'd just suggest that there's a lot of uncertainty involved in making these kinds of long range social predictions given the breakneck pace of technological, economic, and cultural change. I'll just throw out a few wild possibilities, not because they're individually likely but because they demonstrate some of the uncertainty. (1) Machine learning as matchmaker. Rather than the crude matchin…

Big congrats! And having the self confidence and self knowledge to know when to pull the plug on a date is huge.

A huge part of what makes us who we are comes from our mistakes and our responses to them. When I think back on my early 20s - or mid 20s or late 20s, for that matter - I remember plenty things that make me cringe and that I wouldn't do now. But part of the reason I wouldn't do them now is precisely because I've taken that route and had the chance to learn and grow. So don't judge your past self by your present standards (which I can guarantee will themselves change!). Instead make sure that the…

I'm worried if I go into wifey mode too much he's not going to have any incentive to continue "courting" me and progressing in our relationship. I firmly believe that a key part of managing this stage of relationships is for both of you to retain your dignity and autonomy (which is not the same thing as independence!). By dignity, I mean preserving a sense of your own self-worth, your own goals, and your own good judgment. The last thing you want in a partner is someone who's an emotional liabil…

I think it's really helpful to view a relationship like a bank account. Sometimes you make a deposit, sometimes you make a withdrawal. It's perfectly normal sometimes that one partner makes a big deposit or a big withdrawal. What's key to managing a healthy shared workload in a relationship is ensuring that no-one is making all the deposits or all the withdrawals. If the fundamentals of your relationship are sound, I'm sure your effort will come back around. One tip: if he doesn't acknowledge th…
