If shit hits the fan, I have sufficient 'funds in my account' to get the next plane back home'. This is all you basically need. Just make sure if you have enough funds, not just for an airplane ticket back home, but also in case you need to pay off police or whatever. I have this luxury and if I am to be honest, it is a cognitive safety net for me. Honestly, the more you travel the more you begin to realize that the world isn't as bad as the media make it out to be. Most people, especially in 3r…

I see what you mean. I would think the same question applies under any circumstance of life regardless of whether you travel, no? Perhaps those external factors may seem to happen more often away from home. I think that's what makes traveling, esp alone, so exciting. The challenges of the unknown and how you face them. It’s quite surprising how qu…

I've done quite a bit of extensive travel by myself as I'm self employed so have the luxury to book time off and travel. I definitely agree with OP that it improves your confidence immensely. I'm from Canada. In 2008 I took two months off and backpacked alone through Asia - brief stopovers in Japan and China but mainly Thailand and Cambodia. I simply jumped on a plane and only booked my first two nights. After that I just winged it and bummed around with no real plans. Met so many amazing ppl fr…

Recent lurker here. I rarely post online but wanted to jump in on this one. This is an interesting post. I used to play around with this concept and it does indeed work. In fact, an interesting thing happened which I'll explain in a minute. Anyhow, I started doing something similar to what the OP suggests a long time ago. When around a woman I wanted, I would simply think of a specific thought that always gave me joy. It immediately would change my demeanour as I could feel my face relax, my eye…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
