Children can't stand on their own til they're in their late teens at the very earliest. Until then, they take the vast majority of their parent's resources. That's what this is showing. And just because you're giving up pieces of yourself (ie time, effort, all your sacrifices) doesn't mean you regret or resent it. He's a good father because he wants to give all that he is to his son

Well a father sells his time and effort in order to fill his son's stomach. He is literally using up his life to give life to his son. Not to mention all the other things a father (parents in general) sacrifice for their children. It might not sit well with our sensibilities, but it's accurate.

Completely possible that it's not derived. But there's no proof either way. In Middle English times the version of "pussy" that meant weak and timid was connected to cats. But at the same time pusillanimous also meant weak and timid. To think that these two words have no relation to each other despite sharing the same meaning for hundreds of years is kind of dumb. Pussy is derived from the word pussilanimous. Which means timid, cowardly or fearful. I'm not disagreeing with you, I just thought I'd be good to know derivation of a word we're debating
