You can actually get started with this sort of thing even whilst renting. Simply being the only name in the rental agreement and subletting the other bedrooms can allow you to live almost rent free, depending on the house in question. You can also continue this after buying a first house.

As much as people regurgitate the whole "You can't fight the government with just your guns" thing, it really makes a difference. Remember Bundy ranch?
