I thought I'd read somewhere about a US group campaigning against male circumcision. Him getting fired doesn't absolve Reform UK of all responsibility in the matter. I'm enjoying the debate on this thread and not sure where my loyalties lie really. Don't have much of an axe to grind. Yeah, morally it doesn't sit comfortably with me that male circumcision is still allowed. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved and sometimes very serious bad outcomes. But this is the choice my government has made. We have had prosecutions against men who perform circumcisions in a way that increases risk, but there's no big outcry about the practice. If people are not pushing for change it's not likely to happen.

A person donating their body to medical science has not consented to having their body parts photographed and posted on Hinge. It's a straightforward violation of the patient's rights. All patients, including the deceased, have rights. Some people do give consent for body parts to be kept and displayed. But I seriously doubt that particular person has given appropriate consent.

Female genital mutilation is out lawed where I live. Male circumcision is only carried out when medically necessary. Anyone wishing to circumcise a male child (almost always for religious reasons) has to pay for it outside of regular medical centres. We haven't gone as far as banning male circumcision because that would infringe on religious freedom. There is no religion that requires female circumcision. It is a cultural practice.

Scotland. I don't know if she's still in the same post but Prof Sue Black was head of anatomy in Aberdeen and responsible for care of cadavers donated for medical science. She would NOT tolerate this behaviour. On the other hand, we also had the infamous body snatchers Burke and Hare. So maybe I need to stop preaching and sit down.

I don't know why this comment is being downvoted. It is gives correct information about female genital mutilation. I'd recommend everyone looks it up on line and educates themselves. In many cases it's not just partial removal of clitoris. It can be much more extreme and extensive.

Not everywhere. In the UK doctors will not perform male circumcision unless there is a medical need for it. That happens rarely and is covered by our National Health Service. Parents who insist on having their sons circumcised have to pay a private practitioner.

Totally agree with you there. The legal definition of rape involves the abuser having a penis. Ridiculous. The offence of sexual assault by penetration carries the same penalty as rape, but it doesn't give men the same protection as women. I cannot for the life of me understand why this is so. It's absolutely bloody brilliant that Eleanor Williams was convicted and sent to prison. But I firmly believe she would have got away with it if she'd kept her deception on a smaller scale. I really hope her case has a strong influence on British police and justice system. We need to see more prosecutions for wasting police time and perverting the course of justice. According to what I could Google find, about 80% of Americans are circumcised v about 8 to 15% in UK. What drives this difference is that British doctors believe it is ethically wrong to perform unnecessary surgery. That belief is strongly promoted by the British Medical Association. Continuing to allow for religious reasons means babies are exposed to even greater risk. It won't be done in a sterile clinical setting with access to drugs. I'm surprised that even France hasn't banned it. (Had to look that up). Question from someone outside of US. Is there any legal redress for men who feel they have been mutilated or otherwise harmed by circumcision? I have never said she broke no law. That's ridiculous and stupid. She was tried and found guilty. Have you confused my comment with someone else's? Look up the definition of scot free. If she's sentenced to probation she has a punishment, so not let off scot free. Probation is not the same as a suspended sentence. They are two different things.

I can understand you saying that if you're American but in France and most European countries we have a much higher threshold for sentencing to jail, the terms are usually shorter and this is especially true for children. I get what you're saying, but this was a 13 year old child. 13 year olds can't buy alcohol because at that age they can't be relied upon to make good decisions. There were also two boys who were paid money to point out the teacher to the attacker. They have said they didn't know he was going to be murdered. I haven't seen any news report which says what punishment they had.
