Should have reported the comment to HR and not got involved in an argument in the first place IMO

That's because men's attractiveness has always been linked to power and wealth; if you can't protect and provide you're no use as a partner, therefore those who can't find a partner must be failures. And whilst people might say times have changed the data from dating sights doesn't lie - women are attracted to high income men. Meh.

does soeciety expect men to suffer in silence about their lack of intimacy and affection? Yup

In the same way that there’s an overlap between being pro-women and anti-men, there’s an overlap between advocating for men and being anti women. There’s bad faith agents in every group, this one included.

That’s a very generous take but, even if true, shouldn’t be condoned. And wouldn’t be if the target were any other group. Imagine saying “I don’t trust muslims/lesbians/poc etc because I’ve had a bad experience with some of them.”

My impression is that the majority of commentators on that thread, and similar subs, seem terrified of the mens movement. Whether that’s an irrational fear of men, feeling that their movement is somehow threatened or in competition or fear of the consequences of men breaking out of their gender role I don’t know. Maybe all these and more. But those levels of antagonism, hysteria and the need to vilify are off the charts. Ironically probably not that dissimilar to that faced by early feminists. D…

I have a very very hard time with "male advocates" when the only time any "advocacy" about the plight of men in our society is brought up is when it is a response to a conversation about women issues or in response to "feminism" I can only say you're not really listening then.

Whereas in fact pretending men don’t need help and that women are victims with no agency perpetuates the problem they claim to be trying to solve

Yiou have no source for the BBC, yet are sceptical about the BBC? You want to advocate for mens issues, yet are sceptical about a program you haven't seen that is advocating for those issues based on a source you can't access? With all respect this is about as passive aggressive as it gets. I stated earlier in the thread I watched the program last night, if you're unable to take that in good faith I can't help you.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates27/01/22 03:40 PM

You don’t need to, you just shouldn’t be negative or cynical from a position of ignorance.

People on this sub bitching about a lack of advocacy for mens issues. Same people bitching about a program that addresses a mens issue, at prime time on national TV, without even seeing it. I have little time for people like this bud, it’s destructive and makes me think they’re malcontents who just want to bitch about things.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates27/01/22 07:30 AM

Does that make it OK to make cynical, negative comments then? 🤷 People are here bitching about a program that focuses on mens issues- wtf?
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates27/01/22 07:00 AM

Maybe you should just watch it? Comments like this, and the one above, add nothing. It was a really compassionate, well made programme and you’re here talking it down without even fucking seeing it.

1.Teach men not to sexualize women. Die out due to no children born. This is actually a relevant point, things do become self levelling. The pendulum at the moment has swung too far, it will come back to center though if only because women suddenly find out they don't like making the first move. Add to this the increasing awareness that women are also abusers and act without comnsent and you'll find the shrieking becomes a little less shrill. Same with the gender pay gap, now women out earn men …

My understanding is it's when male centric behavioural stereotypes become harmful or damaging to men and / or society. So a man reacting violently because he feels his masculinity is slighted would be a good example, or men being performatively hyper masculine in environments such as prison would be another. That said women also have gendered toxic behaviour but that gets called internalised mysogyny so there's a clear double standard; it's not a term I particularly like or use but it does have …

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates07/01/22 09:22 AM

Using that definition I’m kinda happy to dismantle a patriarchy because it reinforces the whole male gender role that IMO is so harmful; harmful not just because of the way it expects men to behave but also because it dictates how they’re treated.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates06/01/22 07:30 AM
6

Yeah I think this is a good point - as far as I’m aware a patriarchy means men hold most of the positions of socioeconomic power, not that society is designed for or built for the needs of men. So we could live in a patriarchy that’s gynocentric because men have a bias to females anyway.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates06/01/22 07:27 AM

Inwas referring to why it’s used an an insult to others, as opposed to a self reference.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates04/01/22 07:02 PM
35

Incel is used as an insult not because of the negative connotations of the subculture, but because men who are unable to form partnerships / get laid are perceived as being of low value ie the reason they can't find a partner is because they're "not good enough", don't earn enough, whatever. Same reason being called a virgin is supposed to be insulting. Personally I abhor the term and try not to use it.

Tell them that as feminism was originally defined as the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of equality, you’re not a feminist because that doesn’t advocate for mens rights. If they say equal right for women = equal rights for men ask them why they don’t therefore identify as an MRA It’s just scope creep and feminists trying to piggyback or co-opt other movements.

It’s the pressure of living up to the expectation of societal gender roles that cause the issues that are often blamed on TM or similar. Men are told to protect, provide and be strong pretty much from birth - feeling that you’ve failed in this in some way is the root cause of male homelessness, suicide, alcoholism and addiction. Pressure to provide is the cause of most male criminality, pressure to be seen as strong or a protector the cause of most violence.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates31/12/21 08:46 AM
6

It’s certainly due to gender roles, which is what I would say to anyone spouting about toxic masculinity. Trying to separate hyper masculinity from the male gender role is really just a way to try and enforce gender roles ie it’s saying gender roles are OK just not that bit
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates31/12/21 08:05 AM

Personally I think conservative MRAs are generally less concerned with improving mens rights and more concernedwith removing womens. It’s a false flag for them to cape under to enforce tradcon gender roles.

The concept that women are oppressed in any developed nation is pretty outlandish; men and women are both somewhat constrained and boxed in by the cultural expectation of their respective gender roles, this is a long shot from being oppressed though and is a societal issue that is not unique to any gender.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates20/12/21 05:39 PM

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates17/12/21 07:32 AM

I don't think it's that men hide their emotions, it's that society doesn't listen or tells men they're "not being manly". There's a number of studies demonstrating this iirc.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates16/12/21 12:42 PM
8

I think if anything we agree, we're just arguing about the phraseology used. Which I've said all along, shouldn't matter. Yes but....it does matter IMO. We can agree to disagree though, it's no biggie.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates14/12/21 06:34 PM
7

toxic masculinity is literally targeting predefined gender roles Yes but it puts the onus on the man, not the role. I'd be happy enough with equivalence in language if there was "toxic femininity" but there isn't and language is important, which is why we have "actors" and "mail people" not actresses and postmen. Words count, they shape the thought process. believing a man is weak simply because he is homosexual, is toxic masculinity" What about when women think this then? Is that toxic masculti…
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates14/12/21 06:32 PM
12

I just don't have time for people who focus on phrases rather than actual issues. They're interlinked, I can focus on both. ike focusing on the words "black lives matter" and saying "what about white lives?" That's a straw man, I'm not doing that. I'm also not screaming at TM although I do not like the phrase. Why do women today, value something that was forced on them historically? Think back to when women were essentially objects traded and their value was linked to their virginity. Why would …
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates14/12/21 06:07 PM
9

But we shouldn't care about the phrases, I disagree, we should and let's be frank, it's worked for feminism. It's not mutually exclusive to other things we can do. The suicide rate of men doesn't give a fuck what we call it. I disagree, calling it "toxic masculinuity" puts the blame on the man, not the gender role which then leads to inappropriate and ineffective proposed solutions such as "men should talk more" instead of "society should listen to men in pain" If I say "believing a man is weak …
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates14/12/21 06:01 PM
14

Whilst I know you're getting some heat in the thread, being salty with me isn't going to help. Nothing in that article - which didn't seem particuarly citation worthy anyway - evidences it's only men that determined virginity to be of value. We know men did / do value it, my point is so do women which is why women slut shame each other, hate promiscuous women and act in a whole bunch of other toxic ways.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates14/12/21 05:51 PM
16

I think the point being made is that "toxic masculinity" feels like an attacking phrase and puts the onus on men, as opposed to men's gender role whereas the equivalent behaviour in women is known as "internalised mysogyny" which conveniently places women as the victim of their gender. I agre with you that the behaviours are damaging to men, the fact that the language used is so different does piss me off somewhat and I think that's the point other users are making.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates14/12/21 05:30 PM
25

It's men that have determined that virginity in a woman is of value Says who? Women slut shame far more than men. When gender roles were formed / evolved virginity only became desirable because then men would know they were risking their lives and spending their resources rearing their own children, as opposed to someone elses. Men who are mocked as virgins are mocked because it is perceived that they don't have sufficient resources / aren't successful enough to attract a mate. They're failed me…

Most social sciences "theories" aren't actual theories, they're hypotheses ie a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation. Sadly the proponents of said hypotheses are unwillng to subject them to the scrutiny that would make them a theory, predominately because they're not scientists and most social science isn't really science.

I don’t believe a lot of bias is deliberate or conscious tbh. E: most academic settings are left leaning, I don’t believe they sit around talking about how to fuck the working class over, I just don’t think it crosses their mind in anything other than abstract terms. Whereas they do sit around talking about how (white) men have various privileges and are oppressors.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/12/21 08:39 AM

I personally think most IdPol is an attempt, probably subconscious, from the liberal elites to distract from issues of class. And it’s definitely used to put men’s issues at the back of the queue, deliberately.

This is why I generally refer to “a system of Patriarchy” as opposed to “the Patriarchy”

Welp at least people are accepting that women can actually be violent. Small wins and all that.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates04/12/21 10:25 AM

It's a feminist sub so won't publish anything that is critical of feminist ideology - basically they believe men deserve trickle down equality once women's issues are sorted, which of course will never happen. The funniest thing about that sub is that men sacrificing themselves for women is exactly the sort of gender stereotype feminsim is supposed to be fighthing. It's beyond parody.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates03/12/21 10:20 AM

A hammer always sees a nail. If you’re brought up to believe an ideology you then are only interested in facts to support it, particularly if you’ve based part of your identity around it.

I honestly doubt though they would react that way towards a woman I've seen plenty of women attacked in vile ways on reddit. Some people are just douche bags I'm afraid. E: OP has specifically asked for an opinion, if this makes you angry just move on. And by by “vile ways” I include having their comment history stalked and dragged up. I honestly doubt though they would react that way towards a woman. Maybe I'm biased - I'll happily have my views on that challenged
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/11/21 12:48 PM

So if they don't actually want to remove women's rights, we should consider them allies. The ones that don't, I do (in broad terms)
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/11/21 09:49 AM
1

Hyperbole my dude, hyperbole. It's a form of conversation and rhetoric used to illustrate a point. I'm suggesting that the end point of traditional gender roles is "women back in the kitchen" and that social conservatives would happily argue that if they thought they could get away with it.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/11/21 09:43 AM

'can' doesn't equal 'should', I didn't say it did, a choice would be nice. This is like saying that you can turn dogs back into wolves No it isn't, thats the worst straw man I've heard for ages, they're differnet animals, hence they're called different things. Like humans and chimps. it's not about what you are, it's about what you can contribute. Again, I think that's defunct in the developed world. You do you though, we don't have to agree.

Uhm they're right wing dude, so socially conservative as a rule. That means women back in the kitchen.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/11/21 08:40 AM

What's so bad about that The traditional gender role is pretty much responsible for all men's issues and in modern society is defunct. Women can earn. Men can rear kids. you can't erase (at least) 15000-10000 years of social specializations You can, it's just conditioning IMO. If you want to be seen as a sperm bank, fist and wllet then fine, don't complain about the baggage that comes with it; personally I don't.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/11/21 08:39 AM

I find right wing MRAs are more interested in turning the clock back and removing womens rights than anything else. They literally want traditional gender roles.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/11/21 07:27 AM
6

Domestic abuse is men on women only. Not sure they explicitly stated that. It is caused by men acting like the head of the household. I thought they said that was a cause rather than the cause. But maybe I'm splitting hairs, the focus of the whole thing was definitely about how it affects women and there was no mention of it being reciprocal and it does portray women as having no agency, which is a gender stereotype in and of itself.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates24/11/21 02:48 PM

I couldn’t see how that video reenforces gender stereotypes tbh. It’s gynocentric sure

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/11/21 04:17 PM

If you're going to quote stats you really should provide some kind of source and context - like we know most trans victims of assault and murder are sex workers, who are a particularly vulnerable group, so it's not necessarilry about them being trans, more that they do a risky job.

For a start, you can’t ban anyone celebrating whatever they want whenever they want. Secondly, it makes you look petty to even try and gives credibility to the accusation that MRAs just want to piss women and feminists off. You don’t even have evidence it’s done on purpose and can’t prove it, so there’s not even a moral victory. Save your energy for fights that you can win. E: if you really want to pick a fight on this, I’d suggest setting up a “mens entrepreneurs day” on some random day in, say…
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates08/11/21 09:04 PM

That could be the reason but even if it is my advice would be to let it be. There’s no win for us fighting this particular fight.

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates08/11/21 01:05 PM

Where have they said they want to replace it? No one owns the day or can stop another group celebrating it for whatever reason they want. This smacks of insecurity and pettiness, we're here to uplift men not try and stop other groups doing whatever they want.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates08/11/21 01:03 PM

Feminism analyses men's issue pretty much soley from the pov of how that issue affects women, either directly or indirectly. As a movement it's not about men and it's a lie when someone says otherwise.

Conservatives wanting to enforce traditional gender roles is also a form of misandry.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates02/11/21 07:23 AM
27

Men are supposed to be strong, we’re supposed to be protecters and providers so our gender works against us not only in speaking out, but also in society not wanting to know when we do. A woman crying for help is a damsel in distress, a man crying for help is a failure.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates02/11/21 05:42 AM
18

Because conservative subs are full of happy people? C’mon
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates02/11/21 05:37 AM
12

Absolutely - I made an earlier comment ref the Theranos case which, whilst not involving abuse, is still playing on the "I have no agency a man made me do it" defence. I wonder what women think when they read this stuff and whether some of them realise how regressive this sort of posturing is and how damaging it is to women in the scheme of things?
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates01/11/21 03:32 PM
10

That's good. And you're right, the media coverage played a lot on the "white dove" defence, as it did with Caroline Flack after she glassed her BF. Meh.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates01/11/21 03:12 PM
18

The evidence in this case is really quite chilling, she sounds like a sociopath and I hope she gets a life sentence.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates01/11/21 02:24 PM
78

The same thing is happening in the Theranos case in the US - the founder, a woman celebrated as the youngest self-made billionaire, has been accused of misleading investors. Her main defence is that a man - her boyfriend at the time - made her do it. It's unbelievable really.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates01/11/21 01:15 PM

My thoughts are that people who trot this stuff out are either stupid, lack empathy or are being disingenous so I tend to troll them hard.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates01/11/21 12:29 PM
33

The former is as toxic as the latter. Gender roles are a crap deal for both parties.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates31/10/21 11:17 AM
35

Really the only difference is conservatives want men to retain societal power and keep the female gender role intact. Feminists want the best of both worlds.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates31/10/21 10:59 AM
6

Men are rated by society on their ability to provide and protect, which not only explains why men voluntarily do the dangerous work but also why women don’t. It’s all part of gender roles.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates31/10/21 10:22 AM
25

It’s not just gay men, pretty much every guy I know has had unwanted female sexual attention or contact at some point, whether it’s a demand for sex, ass grabbing, whatever. Society does not teach women boundaries in any sense really, certainly not in the same way it does men.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates31/10/21 10:18 AM

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates30/10/21 09:02 PM

I read it a while back, I don’t have sources although there were some at the time. It was related to deaths more than general violence but that was included, I can’t really help further other than that every trans who’d been murdered in the past few years had also been a sex worker. I can’t evidence it any further and to be honest if the general violence part was disputed I wouldn’t necessarily argue - suffice to say the issue, particularly around trans murders, is somewhat overblown.

Black and some other racialized transwomen are more likely to be killed than their cis-female Pretty sure that dirty laundry doesn’t get aired much
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates30/10/21 07:08 AM
2

In general. In pretty much every case of a trans woman being assaulted, and in particular badly hurt or murdered, they’re a sex worker. I can’t recall any instances of this not being the case although there might be some, but the anecdote of trans women being a particularly vulnerable group or in danger from men in general is overstated. It’s just a claim to victim status.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates30/10/21 07:01 AM

She said transwomen would perv out in women' bathrooms Nothing I’ve read by Stock makes those claims and she doesn’t identify as a rad fem or a TERF, she’s been labelled as one as a silencing tactic. She makes a not unreasonable case for biology to be acknowledged in areas such as sport and is supportive of mens spaces. I don’t agree with all her positions but she ain’t a TERF or misandrist as far as I can tell.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates29/10/21 06:23 AM
50

Exactly. I think both sides of the trans argument are based in misandry: TRAs and 4th wave feminists claim trans women are in danger from men, TERFs claim they’re in danger from trans women because trans women are men. Spot the common denominator - they’re both claiming men are the problem they just can’t decide what now constitutes a man. It’s laughable. I even read one muppet claiming trans men were on the uptake because male privilege was so obvious that girls were choosing it ffs.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates29/10/21 06:19 AM
19

Pretty much every case of this is because the woman in question is a sex worker, and sex work is dangerous. Trans women are less likely to be the victims of assault by men than cis women iirc. Personally I think both sides of the trans argument are based in misandry: TRAs and 4th wave feminists claim trans women are in danger from men, TERFs claim they’re in danger from tran women because trans women are men. Spot the common denominator - they’re both claiming men are the problem they just can’t…

As you said further down the thread, you're unable to see the difference between a conservative and a fascist because there's no "stark line" - this is a motte and bailley fallacy and can be applied to socialism and totalitarianism as well as pretty much any other specturm. It's a fallacy.

Even if you're right The movement is eating itself, look at the conflict over trans rights, it's an internal battle that's effectively a petty squabble being played out in public. No one I know really identifies as a "feminist" or thinks women are genauinelly oppressed in the West other than on social media, which is just in group signalling. It's a trend, it will pass. I think stuff like this is just the death throes of a movement that's desperately trying to stay relevant; if women have equality, which by and large they have, then for the movement to stay alive it has to try and discover new forms of "oppression". This also explains the recent shift to intersectionality as well ie it's the movement trying to co-opt other movements to stay relevant / keep women front and centre. Rape isn't a concept in the animal world....
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates29/06/20 08:23 AM
1

I don’t think it’s a valud comparison. Females dont choose male mates per se in a lot of the animal world, the strongest male fucks amd kills who he likes. When animals pair for life it’s often based on a display not soze or strength.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates28/06/20 03:44 PM
2

the vast majority of female animals base their mating choices over which males have high social status. For many animals this is simply which male can beat the shit out of all the others. I would add that in this scenario the females aren’t choosing anything, the dominant male kills any rivals and fucks anything he can get his jands on. Choice isn’t really a thing in the animal world.

All reasonable points ref the internal party wranglings. As for your caricatures of socialists. Do you mean caricatures of the working class? Socialists when leading the Labour Party in 2017 gained 3.5m votes with a manifesto of policies that appealed to people’s needs. Against Teresa May... If you thinl they lost is because they thought they were appealing to coal miners running whippets I don't. Why you think they lost and gave the Tories such a huge majority?

Interesting, thank you. I'm in the UK as well and am gonna disagree with you on the anti-semitism stuff being smears, there's clears instances of where party members were anti-semitic and got a pass and Corbyn turned a blind eye; whether that was because he wanted to court the Islamic vote or it's just a blind spot I don't know. Single women are routinely scrutinised and mocked by society and blamed for their own plight. Why isn’t she married? What’s wrong with her? Women who don’t have children get the same. As do women who are fat, or ugly or lesbian etc etc. And women do get called Femcells too, there’s a sub mocking them and a self help one. And looks is a currency that wears out fast.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates11/06/20 06:40 AM

Yep. It’s tone deaf at best and an attempt to deflect at worst and it’s normally the latter and in bad faith. If anyone wants to raise the issue of men being the predominant victims of police brutality then join or support BLM, that’s exactly what they campaign against and they were the only group that made a fuss about the murder of Daniel Shaver. Or set up your own group, just don’t fucking moan because you think some other group should carry your water for you.

Having two parents just generally means SOMEONE will be there, or there's more money to help support the family. Absolutely. But the argument for a mother and father is mostly just in different abilities My experience of same sex parents is that they tend towards a taking seperate gender roles anyway, or are both kinda genderless in terms of what they do; that said I can't speak for every same sex couple.

Interesting stats. Is this “fatherless” or single parent? My understanding is 2 loving parents is the key, the biological sex being less relevant. And if single parent I wonder how much of those problems are caused by poverty rather than the absence of a parent? Regardless it seems the quick fix is equality of parenting rights.

Why do women (feminists to be accurate) want men to cry like children? When women cry, someone (often a man) comes along, expresses sympathy and fixes the problem. So feminists think if men cry too the same thing will happen, but men know it won't. Men know they'll be perceived as weak and the problem won't get fixed.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates07/06/20 02:06 PM
2

The bizarre thing is both the left and the right seem to want men in a traditional role ie earning money. Its just that the left wants to strip them of rights and stop mn encroaching on what feminism thinks are women’s spaces ie childcare etc and the right wants to strip women of their rights and return to the 1950s. Whichever makes a play for men first will capture a lot of votes

But is their privilege because they are black? Of course not, it can be used an alt-right talking point though ie Look at how well off they are, you're being discriminated against because you're white
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/06/20 09:46 AM

Absolutely, and it can also be used to deny disenfranchisement ie I'm poor and white and uneducated, don't tell me Michelle Obama's kids have less privilege than me.

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/06/20 09:06 AM

Literally no one who would be unpersuaded by arguments regarding black disadvantage would be persuaded by arguments appealing to white privilege I don't disagree, my point is they probably wouldn't even hear the argument in the first place, it just wouldn't register. The term privilige is intentionally inflammatory and used to provoke a response and start a conversation.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/06/20 08:52 AM
1

I think fatherhood makes much more sense to be opt-in. It is, men can have vasectomies which are less risky and invasive than an abortion and mostly reversible. I'm being somewhat controversial i know but it is a valid point, in reality a foolproof male contraceptive pill or similar would be the best solution.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/06/20 07:55 AM

Come on, custodial law is weighted strongly in favour of women and has been since the 1950's. Men have to fight to get access to their children, let alone equal parenting rights.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/06/20 07:42 AM

I'd be more in favour of women who give up their children having to pay some form of maintainance to the state than letting all parties off the hook.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/06/20 07:35 AM
6

I’m gonna ignore whether men or women actually have privilege for the time being and focus on the wording - it’s deliberate and for good reason. When you talk about a group being disadvantaged it pushes the conversation and onus onto that group and allows the groups with privilege - or advantage - to not really think about it. Whereas if you single out the groups that are not disadvantaged and tell them they’re privileged, that their day to day life is not the norm as experienced by everyone, yo…

IIRC in Denmark men get an extra 2 days holiday per year per child as well as 6 months paternity leave and equal custodial rights. Women are also expected to go back to full time work after 6-12 months as the state provides high quality, state subsidised child care; not going back to work would be seen as odd. They pay hella taxes though. Source: danish relatives

I'm not sure this is a subject we can ever get equality for both sides on, it strikes me that the best way forward is to work on the basis of joint custody and that both parties have access to the same state aid and benefits and the same expectation of going to work as well. If one abdicates their responsibility their benefits and some pay go to the other party. Obviously sperm donors or cased where the biological father is different should be exluded, other than that it does take 2 to tango.

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates04/06/20 02:47 PM
3

And it's the "girly" thing that is the insult, not the being gay. To a "man" the worst thing you can say to them is that they're not "manly" ie are girly. This is why straight men accept homosexuality in certain situations, like jail or at sea. The homesexual sex isn't the issue, being seen to be effeminate is. Same applies to women calling lesbians and other women "butch" - it's not the sex they're policing, its the gender role.

You mentioned gatekeeping, not me. You’re the one who’s claiming they’re riots and people shouldn’t march, not me. You’re the one telling people they can’t protest and finding reasons why you haven’t been able to, not me. If you find this being pointed out to be shameful then you really should consider what you’re saying; I suspect you dont you, just want to play the victim to shut the conversation down. If you are advocating for this, you are advocating that the MRM (or at least male advocates) be a violent organization Get outta here. You can march and be peaceful, this is a ridiculous stretch.

I’d say focus on the issue that’s important to you and don’t try to gatekeep or argue that your issue is the most important one or more important than someone elses. If you want to advocate to end police violence against men that’s great, march with BLM and others who are protesting police brutality as well. Equality of parenting rights should definitely be a thing, not really gonna change the mechanics of having kids without women until we have artificial wombs. It’s like women complaining about men being physically bigger - it’s biology

Adopt. Foster. Get a surrogate mum. Lots of options. It’s easier for women as they are the ones who actually get pregnant but that’s not really a societal issue, it’s a biological one.

Can the sub be hypocritical? Sure. It’s a female sub though isn’t it, I don’t see why they would necessarily care about men’s issues and because some feminists say they do, they clearly don’t speak for everyone. I’ve had a few good chats with female work colleagues about male consent; most of them were horrified to find out pretty much every guy has had their ass grabbed by women in clubs etc and didn’t like it, the sort of things they would consider to be assault. And that most of the guys had been pressured into sex by women at least once. It just wasn’t something they’d ever thought about and the concept of them needing to gain consent was alien to them. It was super interesting.

Women under 35 now earn more than men, so it stands to reason that more men will take on the role of childcare whilst women return to work and said men will then get custody in the inevitible divorces that fiollow. Thus levelling the pay gap and custodial inequalities in one fell, economically driven, swoop. Voila!

Do you think children are being treated as property? In many respects they have been, look at child labour & exploitation. Under Christian marraige women are "given" away by their father to their husbands to this day.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates28/05/20 03:25 PM

It's a better phrase than TM and can be used to flush out whether someone wants a proper discussion or if they're using it as a motte and bailey way to attack men in general. And whilst I don't believe that men are "dominating" women in the developed world these days I think it's fair to say we have historically, certainly in socio-economic terms. That doesn't mean men haven't historically had a shit deal in terms of disposability etc, but women were definitely seen as the property of men.

Q: Oh, what exactly do you find wrong about the term 'toxic masculinity' A: It isn't academic in any sense and open to misinterpretation and bad faith use, can you please (use the acadmic term) Hegemonic Masculinity? It's easy to google it. If you're referring to something other than this, please expalin what you mean using plain language. The challenging aspect here is that in parts of the world with low literacy and high death rates amongst men, it does make sense to educate women first. We're talking about children though. If we educate boys (as well as girls) it will improve their literacy and (presumably) lower the death rate.

It's probably fair to state that men have started more wars because men have traditionally held more positions of power, that doesn't mean men are inherently more violent. Women are more likely to kill and abuse children than men, most likely because there's more women caring for children. https://childprotectionresource.online/mothers-are-more-likely-to-abuse-children-than-fathers-fact/ TBH if someone came at me with the line of "men start more wars" I'd assume they're a misandrist rather than …
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/05/20 07:16 AM

That will change shortly I think. Women under 35 out earn men so we’re going to start seeing more and more stay at home dads, which is already normalised in many countries, which means more men will get custody post divorce etc etc.

As well as all the other good advice I’d suggest finding and interest groups, either online or in person: if you like running, the local running club. Almost any woman nowadays can get sex (of questionable quality though) I'm pretty sure that's always been the case, women have always been the gatekeepers of sex. I find it interesting that these days the tables do seem to have turned somewhat, the younger men I know are much fussier than my generation were; whether that's because the web has opened more opportunities for men or whether they're not so conditioned to having to be seen as perpetually horny I couldn't say.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates22/05/20 04:43 PM

Here's the thing: men and women can be under represented, it's not mutually exclusive. Suggesting that women are underrepresented in STEM because they overrepresented in other fields isn't a credible argument. We can accept that, from birth, both sexes / genders are pushed by society into roles and fields of study without undermining either.

3rd and 4th wave feminism and most gender studies teach what could be called a form of cultural marxism, which has replaced class with intersectional feminism / identity politics; a good deal of this type of theory is built upon the notion of there being an “oppressor” class and (cis white) men have been given that label. To entertain the thought that society also oppresses men pulls the rug from under that ideology, so “men” themselves have to change as they are seen to be the problem, not “soc…

Toxic masculinity is a garbage phrase that means nothing other than the sum of the two words or whatever the user wants it to mean; there is no academic research or study supporting its use or meaning whatsoever and it’s often used in bad faith as a motte and bailey argument to attack masculinity and men in general. There is already an academic term for how masculine norms can be damaging: hegemonic masculinity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hegemonic_masculinity
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates20/05/20 12:06 PM

At least hegemonic masculinity is a non attacking term and has some academic thought behind it, toxic masculinity is just a garbage term that means whatever the person saying it wants it to mean.

That is, I was called a "rape apologist" by an intersectional feminist who, (years previously,) woke me up with sex without a condom while I was sleeping. Yes male consent hasn't ever really taken seriously or even acknowledged as being needed, fortunately it seems to be more so these days.

desiring women sexually in general is perceived, largely due to feminist initiatives, as a predatory act Sex being something women can be something reward men with is just an example of female entitlement & male obligation. It's regressive and a form of gender policing that feeds into the patriarchal notion of men being chivalrous & women being helpless. I find it frustrating that more people in the feminist community don't - or refuse to - understand this. E: typo

Personally I think it's a garbage phrase, it's not only accusatory it's ambiguous and can and is be used in a bad faith manner to attack masculinity as a whole under the pretence it's just certain types of masculinity. It's known as the motte and bailey fallacy. https://ashnavabi.com/2015/03/27/what-is-the-motte-and-bailey-fallacy-with-examples-from-economics/ If people want to discuss how masculine gender norms can become harmful there's a perfectly good, non accusatory and non ambiguous phrase…

This is really frustrating, these crowds apparently think it’s more likely that the men are rapists than that someone who engaged in consensual group sex felt guilty in the morning.
