A major issue in Engineering is the kind of jobs different genders are attracted to. The highest paid jobs are often shift work in operations, but the hours can be grueling, it's very demanding, anti social and certainly not family friendly. This puts off many women from applying even though the pay is so much higher, and there was an internal drive to get more women onboard, under 10% of applicants were female, and external applicants attracted by the money, often try to leave to normal day job…

The point wasnt if it's in context, it's that people will take it out of context (deliberately), and possibly suggest that rape/prostitution is being considered synonymous with stealing/selling an X Box, whilst completely missing the intended point.

I tried to be diplomatic afterwards, in saying that those are the companies that perhaps need female applicants the most, and things can't/won't change overnight. There were a group of us and the conversation moved on. Thinking about it, she said a lot less after that.

I spoke to an engineering student today who said she would refuse to work for an engineering company that wasn't 50% women at the top (very male dominated industry, would take decades to turn around). I asked, how is it going to become 50% if women refuse to work for them?

Unequal interest is a really important and ignored area. At my previous workplace there was a desire to hire a female manager as the current managers were mainly male (this was unofficial and not advertised obviously, but the company had declared a 40% female target), but only men applied for the position. They started internally headhunting for female applicants, one of whom I knew, a capable and intelligent woman, but she didn't want it as it didn't fit in with the lifestyle she wanted.

Whilst I agree on principle, this case has other factors, including a penalty for lying to the court about how much money you have. It's done to dissuade one partner from hiding assets. Apparently she hid assets, so even if he got "50%", it would have been 50% of something like 30% of what she actually had, so he'd have received 15% in actuality. The court understandably didn't like that she lied and punished accordingly, like it has with many men before.
