Because the primary job of the civil court system is to correct harm done, not punishing people.

Apart from that time that the Supreme Court released a woman who tried to hire somebody to murder her husband... not because they thought she was innocent, but because they felt the ordeal of the trial was punishment enough.

"Scuffed shoes" isn't boring. The point is to dress not to stand out, because when I write up an interview report, you want me to be thinking about how well you answered my questions, not your fashion sense. Boring is good. Every moment I spend thinking about your clothes during an interview is a moment you lose to impress me. It cuts both ways. Scuffed shoes aren't great. Neither is showing up way overdressed. Do your research, learn the expectations and be boring.

The thing is, there's an expectation in an interview. And when you deviate from that expectation, you're making yourself stand out. You want the first thing that comes to mind when your interviewers do a post-interview report or debrief to be how good you are, not what you were wearing. The only reason to wear a suit to an interview is because everybody else wears a suit to an interview. The most important thing about your choice of clothes is that they should be incredibly boring.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
