God damn, and I was sheepish about asking for half a day off at the last minute for my SO's first ultrasound earlier this week. At half a point each, I could go the whole pregnancy without telling anyone and just leaving early.

I think you're confusing a lot with most. A lot of kids might have to go through this but that doesn't mean most do at all. And even if it happens often, it doesn't mean that it should.
