I just thinks it's ridiculous to equate securing an attorney with presumption of guilt. A person may not feel the DA has their own best interest in mind and having your own attorney is the best way to ensure your legal representation is within your best interests. If police were ever to question me about anything (whether an accusation I made or an accusation against me), I would want a lawyer present to represent me if at all possible.

I wouldn't be so harsh on this particular judge. It seems to me he cracked down fantastically: The judge had particularly harsh words for the “unreasonable behaviour” of the mother, who balked at many settlement offers and ended up getting a deal far worse than those she rejected. There's no law that says "women shall get shorter punishments for the same crime". It ends up that way because people still see women as angels. Judges are more likely to have sympathy for their story or assume they were pushed to commit it by outside sources.

In my province of Ontario, division of assets and alimony laws still apply if you've been living together and in a relationship for more than 3 years. Marriage makes no difference except to accelerate that timeline if you've been together for less than 3.

I think he just meant that rape court = go to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Murder the accuser = you aren't accused of rape, so you actually get a fair trial and presentation of the facts and are less likely to go to prison.

If that were the case you'd expect gay men to earn more than straight men. The reason is likely biological - those who identify male are more likely to drive to be providers. It seems like we today try to ignore that biological differences between men and women might extend to the brain. It's not like we evolved for hundreds of thousands of years in hunter and gatherer roles, by gender... Unless you were born into an already wealthy family, in which case it comes down to how much support you got from them - plenty of upper-middle class families still take an individualistic approach and want to see their kids succeed without much or any financial aid. Lower class white males have the highest hill to climb in this society.

If it was me, the debt I'd incur from the legal fees would more than make up for being able to see daughter. What if it's 10 years from now, you're in a good place financially, but you have no contact with your child because you didn't hire a good lawyer? Would you be able to live with that? Do you have parents who would be willing to share some of the cost? I'd think they'd have a vested interested in seeing their grandchild as well.
