I agree. There's an infinite spectrum of failed relationships; to me, if you've got kids together and you fall in the "Eh, I'm just not feeling it" range, the adult thing to do is nut up, stay together civilly, and give your kids the best push into the world you can.

I would argue that those things aren't "make-work," they're "things that need to get done, but aren't because the right people wouldn't profit." Imo it's the same force behind the issues argued about in this sub. Settling down and finding fulfilment in your early twenties leaves a lot of money on the table for our capitalist overlords.

Starting Strength is a very simple but effective plan. I recommend reading the book so you get the full context, but the basic idea is "Establish good form, then put weight on the bar each session and don't stop till you fail." Your concern about getting too big is one of the biggest misunderstandings people have about weight lifting. Gaining to the point that you're thinking of takes years of consistency with both training and eating a lot and/or steroids (as a woman you can take out the "or").…

Why the distinction between son and daughter?

I think there's some leeway. I'm totally uncomfortable at a club or music festival, but I did pretty well for myself at smaller bars and house parties. Ultimately you are right. If you're one of those "I hate small talk" people, then you're going to have a hard time

How long has he been at it? Assuming he's going all-in it'll take ~6mo to see any appreciable difference, and years to get the "wow, that guy definitely lifts" look. Lifting also has a ton of health benefits, and is a key part of living a long, fulfilling life. You could always go with him...

It's common in some cultures to live with parents until marriage. It could also be part of the parents giving their kids a leg up; you could stack cash pretty quickly making $150k/yr with no housing expenses. Of course we have no way of knowing what the situation is with OP's friend

I was in a similar place as you when I joined and honestly I'm very happy with my decision. The key, as others have said, is to have a plan. If you show up to a recruiter and say "I want to be part of a group and escape my current life," you're going to end up mopping the rain in the middle of Missouri. Between the entry-level jobs, special positions, in-service tuition assistance, and the GI Bill, you can take your life in any direction you want without spending a dime of your own money. Take s…

This is a fascinating comment. My ex thought I was boring because I didn't want to go clubbing till the sun came up every night. I thought she was boring because that's all she wanted to do. Clearly that word isn't very helpful

For the Army you could go Infantry or Armor as u/NidStyles said. If those jobs don't interest you you could try and get an Option 40 contract for a different job (or infantry). That option gives you the chance to try out for the 75th Ranger Regiment. The Regiment is all-male, they've justified to the brass why women shouldn't be allowed in, (and so far the brass have bought it) so as long as you can hack it, it could be a good place for you.

I don't know your situation, but I wouldn't necessarily let this discourage you from enlisting. Even with the PC drama, the military is still a great way to get a leg up in society if you're coming from a disadvantaged background.

The official line is: Since there are 60 dudes and two doors, someone has to be up to catch fires early. The fireguard also makes sure that no one leaves the bay to engage in shenanigans.

In Army. Can confirm. In my Basic Training class it was split 50/50 male/female. There were four platoons of 60 recruits; 30 male and 30 female. We slept in 60-man open bays (think Full Metal Jacket) with the males/females from two platoons combined in each bay. For the males everyone had his group, and there was a lot of playful shit-talk; but we all more or less got along. More importantly when it was time to clean do something, we could work together and get it done. The females couldn't do i…

I'm in the Army. Performance on the physical fitness test (APFT) is a significant factor in getting promoted both directly (your score is worth a certain number of 'points' that determine your ranking on the promotion list), and indirectly (scores are often used to determine who gets special training, which is worth points). Being in shape also plays a big role in how you are perceived. I remember the last thing the commander of my basic training company said to us, "Stay in shape, nothing looks…
