Right, I see. I need to have a look at the methodology when I have time. Initially, my interpretation of the first paragraph is that the researchers took account of the students’ abilities in other academic disciplines and used these as controls. My guess is that this is intended to the reduce the statistical effect of those students who genuinely have reduced ability in penultimate year, accurately reflected in teacher-predicted grades at that time, but manage to turn it around in their final y…

>>Could someone more knowledgable explain this part? Absolutely. In England, university admissions depend on grades that teachers predict students in their fifth year of secondary education will achieve in their sixth year. This paper finds, to the surprise of no one in this sub, that teachers are massively more likely to overestimate the grades that girls will achieve and significantly more likely to underestimate the grades that boys will achieve. This enormously advantages girls in university…

“Likely due to them really wanting to die” Oh god this, so much this, thank you. It’s the first thing that pops into my head when people wheel out this same argument for the thousandth time. People who choose more lethal means, are clearly more intent on dying; whether they’re male, female or any identity really. That doesn’t make their actions “violent”. Choosing to interpret it in a way that characterises people who die by suicide as “violent” is cruel. It betrays a lack of empathy, at very le…

Jesus wept. I don’t think these girls understand just how visible they are, or how revealing this is for their movement. Men are obviously going to see this garbage and draw conclusions. It’s an own goal. For them, male suicidality is an inconvenience. It elucidates how hard men and boys’ lives actually are in reality; this runs the risk of undermining their ideology which famously hinges on men supposedly being hugely advantaged. This is just a cynical attempt to hijack male suicidality and reh…

These findings will come as no surprise to any of us, or anyone who follows men and boys’ issues and sees the ways that people behave around them. It’s bittersweet, really. Definitely positive to have what we know confirmed by robust research like this. Disheartening to find that the staggering scale of the issue is also confirmed.

Autopilot is a very good description, I really do think I see what you’re describing here quite often. There’s a lot that people like this say and do that’s completely at odds with the notion of themselves as the moral actors. Like, it should be obvious to them, it’s frustratingly obvious to the rest of us when looking at them from the outside. But they’re not in the habit of looking. When you point this out to them, it’s amazing how quickly they minimise, rationalise, victim blame and outright …

See, you have to be self-aware to perceive irony in your own words and actions. Infer from that what you will. You can make the same inference from the rationalisation that they inevitably offer up when challenged: “Sir, you are doing <bad thing>” “No, it’s okay to do <bad thing> because I’m doing it to <bad person>!” “But sir, you are the one doing <bad thing>, that means you are the one being <bad person>” “But… no, because I’m doing it to <bad person>, so it doesn’t count!”

One of the top comments makes OP’s post about herself, then accuses him of being selfish. Another makes it about herself, then accuses men in general of taking it too personally. Another guy made some pretty insulting remarks towards OP, at a time of vulnerability, then suggested that men in general need to behave better. I actually lost count of the number of instances of garden-variety projection. Absent self-awareness, lack of emotional intelligence and little capacity for reflection. And the…

I think a lot of people here will find the full podcast to be quite refreshing as I did. The interviewer and the two pollsters do not share any of the views about men that the polled demographic seems to have and they’re very direct in stating that. They also seem to be appraised of young men’s issues relative to women i.e education, employment and pay. It’s worth adding that New Statesman is an extremely left-leaning publication, even by UK standards. Being in boys’ and men’s advocacy really do…

The rise of online misandry, as we’re all perceiving it, correlates just about perfectly with a well-documented crash in the mental health of young women. Misandrist women usually aren’t doing well in life. On the occasions I’ve engaged with them online and offline (don’t do this), I’ve found that they project a lot, tend to lack self-awareness, are quite reactive and overall seem to be quite irresponsible. You can’t really help people like this, they don’t really want to be helped. The best you…

Mark Brooks OBE had a really good way of putting this that closes the door on rhetorical trickery. I’m paraphrasing here, words to the effect of: “It should really come as no surprise that the minority of people who commit violent crimes are usually men when the overwhelming majority of people who come to violent harm in our society are also men.” Memorise the above. You may also benefit from my own addition, you all have my express permission to copy and paste this or paraphrase it as you see f…

Agreed, I believe that most people have a sense of fairness, equality and reasonableness that can be appealed to. I also agree that there is a lot of prejudice towards men and boys, and that leads to harm when it intersects with individual or institutional power.

We seem to have gone mainstream over the past 18 months and I’m still trying to figure out how that happened. There has been a lot of “awareness raising” on our movement’s part. It often feels like shouting into the void but the reality is that moderate people read/hear it, they don’t lash out or immediately jump on board with us either, but they hear it. Fast forward to them hearing about a minister for men and it’s not an absurd idea to them because they’ve already been appraised of the issues…

I can’t say I’m seeing the same thing. The top comments and the overwhelming majority of comments seem to be positive towards the idea and state clear reasons for supporting this move. I found a few people who felt a bit skeptical because they distrust governments i.e “I agree with this but everything the government does is bs so I’m not hopeful”. I could only find one person who tried to twist the narrative à la “men have never been discriminated against” (translation: I don’t know anything abo…

ETA: welcome! Thanks for stopping by and well done for seeking out diverse opinions. Overall, these reflect the usual assumptions that issues faced by men are individual, behavioural issues and a reluctance to confront deeply ingrained structural biases and discrimination. Ironically, they reflect a lot of the same biases that lead to these worse outcomes in the first place. Speculative, may be true, stats are available to anyone who wishes to make this claim. When I started reading the title of your post, I held my breath, hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I was hoping to be relieved to learn that teachers are fully embracing equality and inclusion. Sadly though, this tells us nothing that we didn’t already know. Women absolutely do discriminate against men and in favour of other women. Training, monitoring and dialogue around systemic bias hasn’t caught up with this observable reality. As a result, women just aren’t under the same pressures as men …

I mean, maybe. I’m on the fence about this. I do believe that brain injury from physical and chemical insults is likely an under-recognised factor in criminality. Recent research from Scotland found that 86% of male inmates had a history of TBI (https://www.gla.ac.uk/colleges/mvls/news/headline_1162955_en.html). That’s an arresting statistic, and a correlation so strong that it hints suggestively about being at least partially causal. On the other hand, in my experience, military ranges are almo…

Sounds like a lot of whataboutery. You’re implicating past behaviours by others that aren’t even mentioned here to excuse some emotionally immature middle-aged women to lash out at new fathers. They deserve the flack they get. People are responsible for their own feelings and behaviour. This author and her ilk can take responsibility for herself by going to therapy.

nitpicky Okay, so you’ve put up a defensive barrier here. You’re probably not aware of it, but what you’re doing is called minimisation. When someone is going through it, taking that as your queue to tell them that you think you totally had it so much worse and they were a really bad ally just nukes the relationship at that point. The irony of calling someone a bad ally while being the polar opposite of an ally is palpable. Feminists do this a lot unfortunately. You might be new to conversations…

There are two that I’ve noticed on the rise in recent years. One claims that mortuaries and undertakers no longer employ men due to a supposed prevalence of necrophilia. This is easily disproven by simply googling the number of men who work in mortuary services or the prevalence of necrophilia among men. A second posits that doctors and nurses are trained to brief female patients of a supposed likelihood of men abandoning their terminally ill partners post-diagnosis. This one largely rests on an…

Same, I actually had to stop the video at that point because the guy is so cynical. He took the most insanely hateful piece of content on the internet and invented a context to try to justify it. Yeah, it’s not what it’s purported to be. Think of it as an ideological damage control centre and you won’t be far off. Another thing to bear in mind is the way Reddit works. It essentially made a gratification game out of saying things that people like to hear and rewards it with validation. It comes up in racist narratives all the time. Usually in the form of some absurd extrapolation applied to a large demographic based on the overrepresentation of that demographic in a population of offenders that is tiny. This very well could be true. Though that wouldn’t explain why self-reports of these behaviours are rising. If it were true, it would imply that some women who were around for Me Too just assumed that none of these lessons apply to men.

The study that OP cites, and the previous study whose findings are replicated here, relies on self reports by perpetrators, not victims. Women are reporting that they are engaging in sexual aggression at higher rates. So no, these findings are not the result of men having had a “me too moment” and reporting sexual assault, women are reporting that they are doing it.

Agreed. It seems that this rhetoric is just adding to an ever-growing list of gendered expectations for men. It’s a bit like that old meme where there are 14 different standards for phone chargers. Someone comes along and goes “what a mess, I’m going to make a single standard for phone chargers that supersedes all of these”. And that’s how you end up with 15 standards for phone chargers. Frustratingly, this is the ham-fisted way in which inequalities are usually dealt with. Pressure tends to be directed towards the very end of a pipeline that starts soon after birth. Efforts focus solely on making the metrics look better, rather than alleviating the structural inequalities that give rise to them. It doesn’t meaningfully fix anything, it disadvantages people who had precisely no hand in creating the situation at hand, breeds resentment, creates a perception of tokenism and create…

It resonates with me alright. I’d go a step further and say it’s often met with invalidation, which is a very painful experience for people. I wrote a post here a while ago about projection, citing a different example. The phenomenon you describe is another glowing example of the same primitive defence mechanism in action. These women are lonely themselves, terminally online, and they’re projecting their feelings of shame onto men. They obviously feel that there is shame attached to the experience of being lonely. This is self-evident in their wielding of loneliness with intention to embarrass and belittle others. The fact that they’…

I’m kind of on the same page. People hear phrases like “toxic masculinity” and tend to assume that there’s an antidote in some “positive” masculinity, often leaning into very dated ideas that hold men to very different (higher) expectations than women. The problem is that this just creates a new set of expectations that men are required to measure up to. The whole idea of having expectations of people that depend on gender and judging them accordingly doesn’t sit well with me. Even if they’re “p…

So, if I take out a few generalisations then what we have is essentially this: Someone experiences a very personal attack each time their emotions are visible. A very human response to a personal attack is to become angry in defence of the self. If these attacks are consistent then the person will quite quickly develop anger as a response to some primary emotions in anticipation of an attack that, now, needn’t come. Well first of all, this is quite insightful. I could see it having explanatory p…

I think, from memory, the research generally finds that male teachers have unconscious biases about men and boys but they seem less prone to discriminate against boys than female teachers do. So male teachers would certainly help but this problem is going nowhere until people are required to confront their unconscious biases towards men and boys. The latter would take effect much more quickly than trying to recruit a whole generation of male teachers. This is why I’m of the opinion that unconsci…

They certainly do, it’s a bit paradoxical. My best attempt at rationalising this is that it’s hard to harbour out and out bigotry when you have personal relationships with people of that group, you absolutely can have unconscious biases though. We’ve seen this effect with other demographics before. In effect, the former (personal relationships) may actually serve as a means of diffusing the dissonance arising from the latter (biases). How many times have you heard, in the context of other demogr…

Yes absolutely, knowledge of and proximity to a group can be a protective factor against out and out bigotry. Not the case with biases though, and teacher bias has been identified repeatedly as a factor in boys’ worse educational outcomes.

Just adding further thoughts on whether I feel like I walk on eggshells. I have a few female friends who are teachers and I do share things on IG around boys and education. If I were to expect pushback, it would come from them. But it doesn’t. They don’t mute my stories, they don’t send angry messages, they don’t even skip slides. They seem to stay the course quite consistently. I can only speculate as to whether they’re already on side, are quietly mulling over their own biases, are unintereste…

Romantic relationships? At this time, no effect at all, if anything it’s a shared concern. My partner is a vocal advocate for men herself and has challenged biases/assumptions in her workplace and among friends on a number of occasions. When we first met she was quite sceptical about my gender politics, worrying in particular that it was a sort of “all lives matter” reactionary movement but gradually came to understand the various systemic issues and why we need this movement to address them. Pr…

Well firstly, thank you so much for being a vocal advocate for men. Advocating for men carries so little social/political capital and so much potential for angry backlash that I can’t help but think highly of women who pursue this advocacy. They stand to gain little personally and could come in for so much flak. I can really understand how being called a pick me is very hurtful. It weaponises a very common insecurity in people, namely their ability to form relationships, and uses it in the hopes…

I think you’re right, that is where people would take this line of thought and park it. It would serve as a thought-terminator. I can understand why people would think that male CEOs, celebrities, etc would encourage boys. Obviously, you and I recognise that this isn’t really going to work. For one thing CEOs and premiership footballers are just too remote and unachievable for a 14 year old to be motivated on the basis of their mere existence. Secondly, these very high profile men aren’t directi…

It’s hard for me to offer more than a speculative answer because I’m not aware of any research that has looked at this. But I do have a strong hunch from observation and experience. One of the things that I wish people would do when considering men’s issues is to consider how very very different the messaging environment has been for boys and girls for the better part of two decades. Sexualising weirdness aside, girls seem to largely experience messages of empowerment, encouragement and positivi…

String of thought terminating clichés and vacuous platitudes Harmful stereotyping of men Quite happy to have impressionable young women believe that “we [men] resent women” Moral grandstanding, but devoid of ethical thought (see points 2 and 3) “Men need feminism” (a movement entirely centred on women) 85000+ likes Likes are over 95% women It’s almost like in an attention economy you do best by just telling people exactly what they want to hear. Never mind responsibility for the consequences. Fu…

It is frustrating. It’s like they get close, so close, to actually reckoning with the issue at hand and then do all this awkward manoeuvring on the approach so that they can still avoid it. You’re right about the denial on the left. They have to apologetically make this reality fit their existing system of beliefs or they risk dissonance, backlash or even ostracism. That might also explain why there’s a defensiveness that runs through the article. There’s minimisation - describing this as “focus…

Wasn’t aware that it was tbh. Could be due to weaponised reporting? Or maybe some automated process that age-restricts things based on comments/tags/caption?

I get it man, it’s disheartening seeing how much hate there is. The reaction is a barometer for how a section of the population is but, as I’ve said elsewhere, it’s not necessarily representative of the population at large. People who respond positively to things are a lot less likely to comment than people who get defensive because they’re triggered. We’ve got to keep pushing through, there’s really no alternative.

You have to remember that people who respond negatively to things are just the reactive tip of the iceberg. Far, far more people see a post than actually interact with it. Ask any content creator this. It is still worth sharing the message on any and all platforms because it will inevitably reach people who will go away and process it in their own time. The presence of a vocal backlash from ideologically entrenched people is discouraging, but it is not evidence against the persuasive effect that…

I mean probably not, it’s a two party system and he’s only there because slightly more people thought his boss was the least worst option.

I called out OP in the comments of this post and she got weirdly defensive. She tried to say that she was justified in saying all of this because her comments are “always” full of “what about men”. It seems like to her, this whole crisis was nothing more than a political football to play divisive gender war games with. Talk about kicking people when they’re down.

Our core messaging seems to be that: 1. Men’s issues are real, demonstrable, structural issues that are hugely damaging, and 2. The political left, who campaign on a platform of gender equality and social progress, are not delivering progress on any of these because they’re too hostile towards men. I broadly agree with a lot of what you’re saying, but Vance taking this point on is not a positive step. It cheapens it and makes it too toxic for mainstream people to want to touch. Hell, one of the …

And they’re all from women. You have to scroll very far before you see any men and they’re still anti-male.

This would be helpful. For one thing it would be a good resource to demonstrate the depth of the hatred and hostile intentions. Something that could be wheeled out to show to people with influence. It certainly reflects very badly on our adversaries, it would be nice to see this to turn into a PR own goal for them. Another thing that’s quite interesting is seeing if the acceptability space for hate shrinks over time like it did in other areas. It’s not that long ago that these people were taking…
