It doesn't claim to be backed by science as it excludes many, if not most factors, but it's good for a quick evaluation of the situation. Nobody will stop dating someone a year "too young" because this rule says so, if they get along very well. It's where the common sense kicks in. | 19 | 21 to 17 age gap for a hookup???The rule of thumb I know of is your age divided by 2 and then 7 added which should be equal to her age. A quick Google search told me that it is called Gentleman Rule in the US. So 21/2 is 10.5, seven added is 17.5. Now she's with a guy that got mad at her because she was seeing another guy while they still were in the dating phase and far from being exclusive.
