South Korea has a LOT of societal problems that have convinced young people that the cost/benefit of working hard and starting family...it’s just not there. The birth rate issue is a natural consequence of that. Fixing the issues that led to young people checking out in the first place is the better solution but it’s neither quick nor easy, so the government is apparently trying to take the easy way out

There is always a timer. We are going to die and lots of women start perimenopause by 40-45. Even if someone never has kids, that affects your sex life, your goals, your lifestyle and everything in a woman's life. Affecting someone’s sex life sure, but what do you mean by it affecting goals / lifestyle / everything in a woman’s life?

Asked what they thought about relationships and marriage, the majority said it wasn't worth the effort, that women wanted to be the major earners and be married to somebody earning more than them. Is there any concern in the UK about young men opting out of marriage, family and relationships after seeing stats like this? Men in my country are opting out of marriage and even cohabitation because of the laws here, or if they do opt into it they’re setting up their finances to make it as hard as po…

So the question is whether you'd rather have a girl who was a ho for other men but also a ho for you I just assumed this when dating and honestly don’t have a problem with it. If what I’m getting is as good as what other guys got then I don’t care Easiest way to solve this issue is to always assume the “good girl” performance is just a performance. Doesn’t matter how convincing it is. If you’re being made to jump through hoops or whatever other bullshit then assume the men before didn’t have to …

Yeah this is my observation too and I’ve yet to see a coherent counter argument to this, and I’ve seen this point made a LOT of times here. Sure there are women who marry their financial equal and have equal skin in the game but they don’t represent the majority. That’s the key feature of marriage. It keeps their options open while forcing their partner to forfeit theirs but, if someone is trying to sell you on marriage then ofcourse it won’t be expressed that way!

I’m seeing a bunch of this ITT: The expectation that the amount spent on a date is proportional to the mans wealth. Reminds me of the advice “if your man doesn’t spend X% of his salary on your wedding ring...” The expectation that a man must spend and “impress” a women in early dating, disregarding the fact the he just met her, knows almost nothing about her, is yet to get any investment in return etc etc. The man is expected to invest upfront while dating without reciprocation. It’s funny that …

Nah Australia. I’m curious about how this all works in Canada. It’s a shit system over here but the upside is, if the couple generally keeps finances separate, doesn’t jointly own property, no kids etc then the property settlement claim generally gets dismissed if it even gets to family court. Family lawyers will absolutely ask for upfront payment in such cases and it’s hideously expensive. Doesn’t stop opportunists from threatening property settlement but if they’re told to fuck off and the onl…

I live in a country where the government realised cohabitation was rising and marriage was dropping and their solution was not to change the laws to make marriage more appealing, their solution was giving state the power to deem couples as being in a marriage-like relationship, meaning the couple can be forced through a divorce-like separation. The laws seem to be engineered to make it pretty difficult to avoid this. Disappointing but it is what it is. It is not the top reason I’m not staying in…

I've seen it happen but what happens is around thirty six the girl, who now means so much to the guy, says she'll leave him if he doesn't marry her. I know a few of these couples and they seem miserable. I fault the man for being too weak to refuse the ultimatum and the woman for not leaving earlier if that’s what she genuinely wanted. It’s a useful lesson for men though: if your supposedly child free girlfriend suddenly pushes for marriage as her bio clock is about to expire, be very suspicious…

and want to jump ship easily when she starts aging. Yeah I’ve wondered about this. A man can be accused of wanting to jump ship as his girlfriend ages, and can respond with “so you don’t trust me to stick around without marriage?” A woman with less assets and career prospects can be accused of wanting a power imbalance in her favour by getting married, and she can respond with “so you don’t trust me to not to abuse that power imbalance?” Is either position here less valid than the other? I appre…

If the guy states he doesn’t want kids ever, and they stop dating or breakup right then and there, then sure there’s no issue. I like that, if everyone I dated did that, would’ve saved me a LOT of time What happens to lots of men though is they’ll state kids as a dealbreaker, woman claims to be cool with it for years in the hope that he changes his mind over time or an oops-pregnancy happens if she’s running out of time. If you’re on the same page as your SO on kids, made your relationship goals…

I have a cousin who at 39 years old decided to stop taking the pill and get herself pregnant to the dude she was having casual sex with. He asked her to get an abortion, and jumped on a plane and left the country (foreign citizen) when she said she was keeping it. Did she know the guy’s name and country and try to collect CS, assuming the other country has a reciprocating agreement? Or she doesn’t care about collecting CS and just leans on the taxpayer and family to help raise the kid? In any ca…

I also have seen this or at least an acquiescence to minimal time during my law practice. If the jurisdiction you practiced in reduces child support payments based on increased share of custody, did this have any bearing on men’s decision to do this? Like “you’re paying a lot more in CS if you don’t push for 50/50”, and the men still went with the less-custody option?

OK for STR, not for LTR. On top of the validation seeking issues other commenters point out, I find that women who do this tend to be more mercenary when it comes to milking the most out of their relationships while they put in the bare minimum. It’s as if the subtext of their Instagram pics is “oh you want this? this isn’t for free, what makes you think you’re worth it?” It make senses when you think about it as them marketing their product, themselves, and trying to extract the most profit wit…

Yeah sort of. Rich person pays half of rent/bills/groceries, but any discretionary spending is paid individually out of the individual’s own income. So there’s a big gap in how well each person can “pamper themselves” without rich person helping to bridge the gap.

It’s absolutely fair. If they both work the same time, they can handle the same chore workload. Out of curiosity, do you think it’s still fair for both if the first paragraph of my OP doesn’t apply? Suppose that the couple has roughly equitable chore division at home, split by whoever is best suited to whatever task, and they have about the same amount of time to relax, enjoy each other’s company, decompress after the working day and all that. But, the higher earner doesn’t commingle assets, spe…

Yeah I’d feel bad for the wife there, she’s away from home for much of the day, working a skilled job (which she probably got with her time/money invested in college) and making a decent living. The big thing for me is that situation, is that it doesn’t look like she chose the “low effort, low stress, low income” path and is working hard to pull her own weight. A hard line approach on chore division would sink the relationship and I’d get why she’d nope out of that situation if most of her free ti…

Yeah if you had to rank the average guy’s desires in his partner I imagine “doesn’t have kids already” is pretty close to the top of that list. Not knocking any willing stepdads here who are genuinely happy to step into that role, but my observation is that men who took on a single mom were clearly struggling with dating and were just taking what they thought was their best option. I’m observing an early 30s crowd though so it may be more skewed with older couples.

Damn that’s rough, thanks for sharing all that. Reading all these stories sounds like once kids get involved, the Family Court gets ridiculous with property settlement. In a while I’ll be defacto (unmarried no kids) in the eyes of the government and my mortgaged apartment is in my name, this was before I met her. Soon I’m getting advice from a family lawyer about my situation as it sounds like a binding financial agreement will protect my assets to an extent, but if kids get involved that goes r…

Random question: since you said “bloke”, is this Australia you’re talking about? Because if it is My uncle and my friend are both idiots and they did not see the signs or financially protect themselves in anyway. But most people don't so this happens to most people From what you saw what were the signs and what could they have done to protect themselves? Hopefully I never have to deal with the Family Court like that but good to learn about others experiences with it

Video games and porn have gotten pretty good. We will basically be like Japan with the herbivore men I think most of the western world is still far from that happening but it’s slowly heading in that direction. The reward/effort ratio of video games and porn keeps improving but you can’t say the same for committed relationships I’m happy in my LTR but there’s a ton of readily available distractions to burn my time on if I wasn’t

Some sexual tension is necessary Starting out with sexual tension and excitement early on, then sprinkling bits of comfort and “beta traits” later on, that seems like the way to go from what I’ve seen personally and what I’m reading here. That’s assuming you’re open to an LTR to begin with, but it looks like men are incentivized to keep the comfort low and sexual tension high whether they’re after something long term or short term

Psychologically and practically, it works for me to say 'I'm not completely closed to serious/long term/marriage'. First of all, it's true, second of all, the idea that it's possible, but still a challenge, reserved only for a potential few who make the cut, can translate to 'boyfriend material, but attractively selective' in her mind. This sort of how I approached dating when I was still single and it worked out well for me. Maybe this will turn into LTR, maybe not, but I stopped going on first…

Yeah I was thinking something similar. It’s common here for a repairman to check our equivalent of a zip code and quote a higher price if it’s an affluent area, or if a landlord has ordered the repair rather than the tenant. As a property owner who deals with this, it’s up to me to negotiate the quote or go elsewhere if I feel like it’s a bad deal (and I do) but it’d be nice if it wasn’t an issue I had to spend any thought or effort on in the first place

The husband-material stuff will inevitably show itself. When she focusses on that in the initial period I'll speak about it briefly with enthusiasm and then close the box. "This isn't for you. You haven't earned it. So the benefits of these husband-material traits are only provided on your timeline under your own terms. Would you say it’s not as important that she notices these traits early and how she can benefit from them, and what’s important is how discerning you are with who gets the enjoy …

If sex doesn’t happen in 3-4 dates then I’m moving on. It worked out well for me and my LTR It’s a solid way to filter out women who are just “meh” about me. It’s a reassuring way of knowing we have a strong foundation of attraction to build a relationship on, whereas jumping through hoops over dozens of dates over the course of months? Not so reassuring. I get why there’s pushback from women on sex early in dating since delaying it will filter in men who are more invested in them than vice vers…

I assume it upfront and don’t assume otherwise until we’ve had a clear talk about it I used to date someone who told me several times she was seeing other men but she was obviously forcing it into the conversation, it wasn’t something that naturally flowed into whatever topic we were talking and it wasn’t subtle either. Like a clumsy overt way of telling me she was keeping her options open, probably had the opposite of the intended effect though. It’s gross when someone’s trying to manipulate th…

Yeah her advice has that same kind of parental “it’s good for her” vibe to it, like you get with arranged marriages, no regard given to attraction and the consequences of it Ideally she gets a man that ticks both the emotional and logical boxes but there’s not a lot of them out there and they’ll have standards accordingly. If she can’t find a match for her standards and prefers to be single at least she can provide for herself (like I see with a lot of high achieving women). But if she really wa…

The last part of the Sandberg quote reminds me of my parents trying to talk me out of motorcycles, “trust me, cars are just as fun to drive if you know what you’re doing”. Their emotional comfort of knowing I’m not risking my safety on a motorcycle had no bearing on their advice of course! Like if we take this logical argument and repackage it as emotional one, maybe we can trick your emotional self into going along with it? If someone had to logic their way into a relationship, with the absence…

I’ve seen lots of cases where women know this advice of waiting things out, understand all the reasons behind and they still don’t act on it. Ofcourse plenty do but if the man’s desirable enough then it might be difficult. Maybe the risk of losing the guy if she doesn’t have sex on his timeline rather than hers is too great, she worries that he’s not invested enough yet and won’t be until sex, she may have insecure thoughts about possibly losing him if he’s “made to wait” especially if he’s very…

Disagreed if we’re talking about the extreme ends of the scale, I think there’s a limit to how much society can cater to one gender before that same gender starts to suffer and everyone ends up worse off. Thanks to a family court system that typically doesn’t favour men, a Canadian boyfriend may set a higher bar for his girlfriend for committing to marriage + kids, if he decides it’s worth the risk. Maybe the relationship falls apart if he decides that it’s not. An ex-wife may benefit from a gen…

If they’re well into their 40s (or older) and content with their decision, then great, I’m happy for them. I know a couple where the mother had her son at 38 after being indifferent to having kids. They seem happy on the surface but I’m wondering how much of that decision was made by grass is greener thinking, while they still had the opportunity. I suspect less people who regret parenthood are going to admit it compared to those who regret being childfree so you’ll never get a clear picture
